it was suggested by another mechanic that the spring came off during fitting I spoke to the mechanic who fitted it and he said no, he's fittted loads of bearings, never had that, always checks and it prob came off when the front bearing race was being punched out, look at the spring and you will see no scoring or damage to it.

Hi

In those pics the race just looks like it has some oil on it.

Not seen a spring doing that before either.

All the best

How pitted is the race, can you see the roller retention spring jamming between the inner and outer race? I have never seen that before!

The bearings were replaced on Thursday night. The mechanic was a bit concerned because after packing both new bearings, they still felt dry. The rollers were not rolling free. If there were other bearings to hand he would not have fitted them. He hopes they will loosen up after being loaded and asked me to bring the car back after 100 miles to check. In hindsight the bearings should have been packed before removing the old ones. I asked him how come he didn’t do so and he said that he never has, you don’t expect new bearings to be faulty and they could just order new ones.
The date on the box of the new bearings is quite old and the protective coating of I think oil had become solid and some rollers were not spinning free.
Has anyone else experienced this?

The last set seemed ok but after about 6 months failed.

Well upon further inspection the inside offside bearing is "excessively rough" There was no water damage as the seal was replaced and intact, it was not overtightened, it was not loose, it was not dry and had no excessive play. The bearing casing was shot.
I now have to get an advanced replacement under warranty.
What joy Laughing

I just looked at the manual and found the correct way to do nut.
Tighten to 25 - 29Nm while rotating drum 4 or 5 turns in each direction, partially slacken nut and strike stub shaft with a mallet, then hand tighten to specified torque.
Then goes on about checking end float, which i dont have and peening over nut when done.

minus the 25-29Nm and used the tried and tested alfa mechanics way of letting the woosy bar drop.

You can usually get a good idea just by lifting each wheel on the jack and turning it.

You may have overtightened the hub nut. You're supposed to slacken it off a tad once the bearing is properly seated. If that's the case, get another bearing kit(or two) and start again.

The correct procedure for tightening is to turn the drum whilst tightening the nut to a specified torque(about 20lbf ft) to seat the bearing. Once it's seated, slacken the nut slightly, tighten it as far as you can with your fingers without disturbing anything and block the nut on the thread with a punch. Then tap the end of the thread with a mallet to make the outer bearing sit against the washer. There needs to be a tiny amount of play.

PostPosted: Wed Mar 04, 2009 12:44 am    Post subject: wheel bearing noise

Hey guys, i recently replaced my rear wheel bearings, both sides both inner and outer. A mechanic friend helped me out. Now i am no mechanic but consider myself quite competent when working on my car as i have owned 2 ser 2's and 2 ser 3's. I have done this job in the past with no problem but the rear wheels would always work loose slightly. I packed the bearings and my mechanic friend said they are ok, the old bearing shells were punched out and the new ones fitted. Now i checked the nut was tightened correctly, hold the woosy bar at the top and let it drop, normally 90 degrees. All seemed ok and i checked for settling in after a few months there was no looseness.
Now i am getting a bearing noise, can it be from the rears? It sounds like it is but surely it cant be.

Here's my question, finally i hear you say.

Can a front wheel bearing that is failing sound like it is coming from the rear?

Can you remove the rear bearing rubber seal without damaging it to repack with grease?

I have to fit new pads at the front and the shoes were low at the mot so i thought i would replace the rear shoes at the same time, so i thought i might as well have a look.

Thanks
Alan
