I guess the suction just isn't constant enough at low revs, since it only comes from one (or two?) cylinders. The valve must help hold the diaphragm in position between suction pulses.

knighty2	Posted: Wed Aug 19, 2009 10:21 am    Post subject: anti pulse valve on my 1.7 carbed boxer motor, a while back I had a terrible clacking noise originating from my distributor, principally from the diarfram advance widget - upon stripping and re-building the distributor all was fine and servicable, bust still a clicking noise, so I just ran with the vac line disconnected........I have since read that some people fit these things below (bottom of page).......were these standard fitment to 1.7 boxers with twin 40's???? http://www.dellorto.co.uk/merchandise/products.asp?CategoryID=12&PartsectionID=71 are these a 1 way valve???? I have now re-connected the vac line but put a restrictor in by using a piece of 4mm bar with a 1mm hole drilled through it, that has fixed it a treat, as I think the suction from the vac line was so aggressive it was causing the diafram to go mental
