Hi guys.

I've had the heads off to reseat the valves which is done......happy man.

The problem i have is when i put the cams back in, the valves are kept off of their seats by the tappets, and before removal the cams could be moved side to side by hand where as now they're tight.

Is it because the tappets need the oil pressure of a running engine to adjust? As i can't see that i've assembled it incorrectly.

Also whilst i'm here, anyone know the torque setting for the cam journals

Thanks, Lee

you should be able to close the valves - i had to give them a tap with a hammer and there is a position on the cam which should be free , ie the cam should be able to move freely without touching the tappets - did you use oil to lubricate everything when you put it back together?

you need to remove the buckets and squeeze out the oil in a vice, takes ages man, and the car will be as rattly as hell on first start up and may even not run on all four for a while, but once its hot, all will be well again.

Cheers Steve, Aforalfa.

I've got some in the vice now......and the missus is doing the rest between her thighs Laughing

Steve; I guessed the torque setting wouldn't be that high.....they undid very easily!

Hi,

pre-lubing of the tappets can be done by putting the tappets in a pot full of engine oil, then "cook" the tappets in the kitchen (warning, max temp before the oil starts fuming is around 100°C don't heat much higher!)
all the air held prisoner in the tappets will form bubbles and come out of the tappets. Then let cool while still in the oil. Tappets are then reinstalled and don't rattle at all!

regards,
zp

Hi,

oooooh i'm so stupid...i forgot to mention that tappet cookery is best done when the wife has gone shopping, and isn't expected anytime soon!
besides, i suggets you use an old can instead of the brand new frying pan, engine oil and french fries don't mix very well indeed!

all the best,
zp
