Our new 33 ('93 1.7 16v 35k miles), has, according to the file that came with it, had two new cats in the last 7 years / 10k miles!!!!!

On idle I'm getting a tinkling noise from the general area of the centre box so I fear the current one has gone too.

So:

- Is it usual for cats to fail on the 33 frequently.
- Is it possible to get through an MoT without one?
- What's the cheapest source for a new one and roughly how much?

Thanks again and apologies for the deluge of Qs from a newbie.

Hi,

The cats normally last for ages, with the normal problem being rotting of the tailpeice where it joins the back box, or rusting thru where the hanger goes directly behind the cat.

http://www.cats4less.com/ site seems to be down 0844 880 4141

I would remove the cat section and tip upside down to see what comes out. That tinkle might be the heat shield, I also had that sound and it was parts of a cat in my rear section, my cat was ok, so the rear section had come off another car where the cat had broken up.
I have been told that the cat should last the life of the car, i would check the emissions upstream of the cat, otherwise it will ruin another cat.
