Well my clutch issue goes further than just the hydraulics so im gonna take it out and put a new one in, so I need to remove the engine and box..which will also give me chance to do cambelts etc and maybe headgaskets while its all more accesible.

Now ive read a few guides online on how to remove everything but my question is about how to support the car.

It doesnt drive so I cant get it up ramps, will the front sill jacking points support the full weight without any damage to the front end, I could remove the wheels and stuff to lower the weight but not by much. It needs to be lifted that high really as I need to get the engine out from underneath of course.

And then as regards removing the drive unit, is it just as easy as undoing all the electrics/fuel/cooling systems and everything connecting the engine to the car and then just lowering away?

Does the gear lever come down with the gearbox? And how many mounts are there, I can just about figure out the front one, and gearbox mount, and is there one on the bulkhead too? Sorry for all the questions but I need some clarification before I go at it like a bull in a china shop and wreck everything, thanks!

Hi there (we need a name soon!)

As for the front jacking points, they should have no problems supporting the car as long as they're solid and not suffering from any rot.

Mounting points; one at the front (large vulcanised rubber thingy) one at the top of engine on bulkhead, side stabiliser bar (bolted on to the block from underneath) and gearbox one at rear. Gearlever will come down through whilst dropping box........take off the knob first!

And as for dropping the whole thing out I'm not the best to advise as the times I've done it I've taken the engine out through the top after splitting the box off. I think you'll have clearance problems on the front cross member and the suspension arms ie, they need removing also, but someone will hopefully be able to tell you for certain.

I have done many engine clutch, gearbox, engine changes over the years, mainly in 8v's and used to do it through the top until I was told to drop it out the bottom.
I did my first 16v a while back and it was a piece of pie.
I didn’t remove the gearbox, front bumper, radiator, drive shafts or wheels.
You will need a 3 tonne jack, as they go higher than the 2 tonne jacks and the pad of the jack is large enough to cup the engine sump.
What I did was jack the car up by the front cross member as high as you can and then lower the car onto 2 tonne axle stands, which were at maximum height.
Then remove the cross member with as much attached to it as possible.
Then cup the engine with the 3 tonne jack and remove the top, middle engine/gearbox bolt and lower the jack, check on the gear lever.
Then remove bolts around the bell housing and you can slide the engine out the front, it will just cleat the bumper.
Support the engine with wooden blocks and replace the clutch, whilst still on the jack and then slide back in and refit.
I have missed out all the little bits which I hope don’t need to be mentioned but if they do then I’m sure someone will fill in Laughing

To do a clutch I'd drop the lot.

This was my last time when i changed the box in March.

Thanks for the help all, my names Alex by the way!

Ive taken my interior out today and sure enough there is rot in the floors and it needs some work on the backs of the sills too so it seems that has to be done 1st, im going to print off all these relevant pages so I have them for when I finally get the floors solid though Crying or Very sad
