I bought some pattern HT leads a couple of weeks ago and I suspect what I'm about to say will be no suprise to anyone.

The new leads have plug connectors designed for plugs with the screw on bit fitted whereas my plugs (35k car so probably the original platinum tipped) don't have it fitted.

I've a day off today so I thought I'd try and fit the screw on bits that came with the leads (manufacturer obviously saw this one coming too). Ha, well I might just get the two offside ones fitted with some luck and a lot of patience but the nearside ones? No way.

So:

Does anyone know of a source for leads with the correct connector?

Just out of interest, how does one change the plugs. Presumably the engine has to be lifted slightly does it?

May choose to make my own with some of these tasty NGK plug caps:

Either SB05F or XB05F should do.

Available from various bike suppliers online it would seem.

Hope this helps, from any bosh dealer, alfa sidlow did have some in stock, as they were ones i ordered but didnt match what i had, but they have gone bust, im not sure what has happpened to their stock.

After spending 2 hours once trying to get off non original leads, due to the rubber sticking to the plug insulator and not being able to get the plug removal socket on because of this, i would only fit original ones.
You should be able to remove the plugs with the plug socket a U/J and a small extension, failing that the original alfa tool is by far the easiest. Removal should not be a problem, its the fitting on non original leads that is as you cant push hard enough to get the lead to snap in place.

Thanks Al. Those NKG connectors are truly top quality and shouldn't give any problems.

The Bosch applications catalogue only lists the P4 for 16v engines. Is anyone aware of any differences between the P4 ignition system and that of 2WD version?

Alfashop used to sell brecav leads which were the business.

The box spanner and slim ratchet tool would have originally come with the cars toolkit and are almost essential.

Platinum plugs should last 60,000 miles. If you do want to change them, i have 2 brand new AR boxed spares which you could have cheap to make up half a set. Alfa originally sold these (NGK) plugs for something silly like £20 each!

Pretty sure 16v and p4 use same dissy,leads etc etc. Pre cat cars including the p4 wont have platinum plugs, most probably should be Golden Lodge 25hl(??)

Hi

Pre cat cars didn't use Golden Lodge plugs (although it is a common trick to use the lodge plugs from a 75 TS). I forget which ones they do use.

To change the plugs you pretty much need the tools from Alfa that came with the tool kit. With those pretty easy.

I have a bit of a stash of those plugs bought at a car show.
