|
|
Considering 2 options of priming the engine (and testing the new oil pump gears), without washing off the assembly molykote paste on the new lobes and tappets.
First option using the oil pump and starter motor.
-before installing heads to blocks turn the cam pulleys so all valves are closed.
-attach heads to blocks.
-Do not attach cam belts or put in plugs
-fill sump with new oil
-use the starter motor to run the engine and pump to prime the whole system (maybe even with fuel pump line detached so fuel does not wash down the walls).
- this way the system fills with oil but without the cams rotating and washing off the assembly grease essential for the new lobe/tappets break in period when you start the engine.
Once a good pressure is reached and oil has filled the engine, turn crank so all pistons are away from valves, just slightly of TDC , rotate left cam pulley to TDC, then turn crank to TDC, slip on left belt, hold right cam pulley in place and slip on right cam belt.
- replace plugs, fuel lines, etc, and you're ready for the 20 min break in period required for new cams/tappets.
Second option could be just to remove oil sensor next to filter, add adapter and manually pump oil into engine by a hand pump.

I would assemble the engine completlybut leave disconnect the distributor and use the starter to prime the engine just like if you had given the car an oil change. _________________ PHAT 33 |

Thanks mate.
Yes I decided on that in the end. Guy Croft members were telling me the same.
Just leave off the fuel pump lines, so the walls don't get washed with fuel, also no plugs of course and ignition coil disconnected.
Watch the oil pressure gauge and once it rises then I'm done. Should be enough paste on the lobes/tappets for the break in afterwards. _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV
