I have a problem getting in to 2nd from 1st. But that car has a cut gear stick so its 6" or more shorter then normal. So i tihnk that could be the problem.
Also when the car is on tickover theres a ratling sound in the gearbox, but when i press the clutch is noise nearly go's away.
So what or which one could be at fault.
Also what gearbox's can fit mine? Could i stick a 16V one on my 8v?
Cheers

The tickover rattling sound is most likely to be the thrust bearing, generally not too important. A more grinding rattling would, I think, point more to a gearbox load bearing wearing out. Not being able to change into second easily is a common fault of the syncro wearing out. (change carefully, pushing stick more to left halfway between 1st and 2nd). I would also like to know if an 8v gearbox could be replaced with a 16v one. They look pretty much the same. _________________ Owner's Club 33 Registrar. Now from P4 & S2 1.7 QV

The rattling noise is a common problem with 33's - our's makes the same noise as well. As did our 145 boxer if I remember correctly! I don't think it is anything to worry about, as we have had the same noise for a long time, and it isn't getting worse. |

As far as I know all 33 gearboxes are outwardly the same so would bolt straight on to any 33 engine.
The 16v gearbox I believe has something on it which the 8v one doesnt which means 8v boxes cannot be fitted into a 16v,but it should work the other way round. ie 16v box into 8v car. _________________ Presntly own

As I know the gearboxes of 16V and 8V are the same...The 96615081 or 96615078 are alfa codes nad are identical. I think only flywheel is different...60538443 on 8V and 60538539 on 16V _________________ -- ALFA ROMEO 33 Q4 --

Hi there,
Laki is right! I've just dissambled my gearbox cause I wanted to change the synchros and some of the bearings, and the 16v gearboxes and the 8v ones are the same (on the outside). But the flywheel from a 16v is different, and on the 16v engine (on the bell-house, I think its called), there is some kind of a sensor for the flywheel. I suppose it reads the RPM... _________________ Alfa 33 1.7 16v '88 QV

It reads rpm, goes to the computer and regluate ignition...and coil.... _________________ -- ALFA ROMEO 33 Q4 --
