Is there any problem replacing a non-cat 16v engine with one that originally came from a car with a cat? Somebody just told me that the engine from the 'cat-car' will have different valves and would need different timing. Is this true? Grateful for any information.

no physical differences mate. valves are same part number, ignition timing change is slight and controlled by the ecu.....it will just make more power than the cat car without the cat and closed loop injection system (be sure 2 keep the non cat wiring + ecu etc) , just done the same thing no probs

Hi Paul,
that one with cat, has different inlet cams, just enough so it can pass exhaust emmisions test, lost a few hp because of it .
As boxer allready told be sure to get all wiring and ECU if you can.
non cat version does not have wiring from ECU to lambda probe, so in case you wan't to put it at some point it's easier with cat wiring .
cat ver also has fuel octane/lambda probe relay look alike thingy.
Besides that nothing else, Bosch motronic ECU 4.1 was same model with different inside chip with fuel mapping, and all other engine bits and pieces are same for cat & non-cat ver.

hey thats useful to know tvatavuk, i didnt know about the cams being different... thought it was just 145/6 cams that were changed....hmm ill have to measure some on the bench, a swap back to the old motor's cams is in order if this is the case!

the cams are different (a little)

also the 1990-1992 and the 1993-1994 16V boxer engines are different, also the cams are different.

1990-1992 = 132 hp with cat, non cat 137 hp
1993-1994 = 129 hp (non cat wasn't availeble)

non only the hp is different, also the drive ability is different, the 1990-1992 drives more sportif!!

I wouldn't be much suprissed if for UK they were same engines only with and without cat. UK was very specific market (non-cat/cat and non-ABS/ABS laws or should I say standards)

Thanks for your replies. Am going to try and change engines without removing gearboxes though I'm not sure how easy that is, as the car receiving the engine will be a P4 and it's more of an effort remove a P4 gearbox etc.

Hi,

Looking at parts cd, can confirm that cat 33 16v, and 145 33 16v use inlet cam 60610542. Pre cat 33 16v uses 60549581.

Exhaust cams and inlet and exhaust valves all same.

My car '93 33 16v had a burnt exhaust valve 4 years ago. I removed the engine and head, but got an Alfa specialist to do the headwork. They replaced the bad valve, all buckets, seals etc, and also the inlet cam (as had worn-this side only!) with a 'good used' one. There is no part number on the bill for this camshaft but i strongly suspect it's the earlier one. Have had no problems!!!
