Hi,

The speedo on my s3 33 16v is playing up.

It started to go intermitant, then, not working at all.

The weired thing is that the miles still turn over!! - Is this a fault at the speedo head do you think??

Have yet to check the 'prong' into the gbox, but the conection plug near the bulk is ok.

Any advice gratefully received,

John

Hi,

nothing weired about it. signal from box goes to instrument panel-to speedo circuit board and from there one signal after boosting goes to milage counter other to current speed.

My guess would be that you may need new brushes on speedo motor/rotor, or better wires. They do tend to break.
Common other problems are one resistor around 7 Ohms? and IC/transistor BD138/140 equivalent. Latter two tend to unweld them self or burn as result of too much power needed to rotate speedometer.
There are quite few posts here about spedo, so try to find them in search.

Goodluck.

Could sell you a 2nd hand replacement speedo or console cheap, though there will obviously be a change in mileage, but 50/50 it may be a wiring problem. Just fixed my girlfriend's 33 doing exactly the same thing and it was a loose contact at a wire joint which eventually came completely free, though this was a series 2.

Hi,

Got underneath and looked at the 'prong' yesterday, and it all seemed ok. Will have to take out the speedo head next week for a look.

If it looks unrepairable, i may be in the market for a replacement, and will contact you Paul.

Cheers,

John

Well its a standard problem with 33's, never got sorted out. My mileage doesn't clock over when the speedo drops though. I heard if you replace the bushes and stuff you should be ok....

Hi,

After changing everything as a process of elimination, it looks like it was the sensor in the gearbox in the end. The original console now seems to be faulty too, but I think this became mucked up in the process of repeated removal and testing.

So now have replacement console, speedo head (with my original mileage wheels transfered over) and speedo sensor, and it all works- hooray!

Thanks to Paul Hide for all the bits!

I was getting a very fast speed at first, but this was down to the positioning of the needle. I set it at 20mph where the stop is, but it would seem that it needs to be set at zero, then lifted up to the stop to give true(ish) reading. So if selling your 33, perhaps try moving the needle a bit. A potential buyer won't believe how fast it is!!! Twisted Evil

Hi
I sent John a message asking this but in case he is not around to answer Ι'll ask here too.
I have lost speedo & Mileage counter functions. I have removed the units from the car but all looks good. I want to check out the wiring , have found(hopefully) the sensor on the gearbox, removed the circlip but find that it just moves slightly sideways but not upwards. How do I get it out without damage. Does anyone know if the amplifier, mentioned elsewhere, is incorporated in this sensor. I want to build a small tester to check out the wiring etc and give a speed indication. But I am not sure what sort of pulses are recieved at the speedo.
many thanks

Hi,

I have Pm'd you back.

Do not know about the amplification though, I assumed it takes place in the little circuit board on the speedo head, but only guessing???

Finally manages to lever the speedo sensor out, didn't take much doing and no damage done.
Has anyone ever tried measuring the resistance of this thing? I get 5 ohms on a digital Multimeter, suggesting that it is a winding that senses a rotating metal part as it comes into close proximity to the sensor as it sits inside the gearbox.
