All,

Right then.... I'm after ideas for sorting out the Alfa Rosso Red (now more like pink clouds) paintwork.

I use Autoglym polish, which gives it a deep red shine for about a day. It then reverts to the original pink(ish).

I'm getting tired of it, because the car is mechanically sound (touch wood) and it just looks like a big pink fairy!!!!

Any ideas (other than a respray)?

Bob

Hi mate!

Have same colour car.

First wash car, then use T-cut.
On top of T-cut apply wax.

Finished it last sunday and still looks good..

Hi Bob,
I had a 'pink' Renault once. The problem with base colours ( especially red and white) is that the original finish degrades leaving the pigments prone to oxidation and only a respray will give you a lasting shine Crying or Very sad
What i did was compound the paint with G3(Farclea) and then polished it with Mer. This worked for me but to keep it looking half decent I gave it a polish every 4-6 weeks!
Go easy with the cutting compound or you'll end up with a silver car, I know Embarassed
My therapist will be proud of me admitting to owning a Renault

My name is Bob and I previously owned a 2CV. (No, really).

Still 'flat' cylinder design tho!

Hi Bob
Have just recently used the same T-Cut then Autoglym Super Resin Polish technique as the other Guest (ak8636) post above.
Gave a splendid result ... neighbours coming up asking "have you bought a new car?"
Used minimum 'elbow grease' with the T-Cut; accepting the return of the original Rosso Red without busting a gut going for glassy smooth finish!
My theory is that the autoglym can supply the necessary protection.
Car sits in the full sun every day, and two weeks on still looks like new.

John P
P.S. Because I hope to get a few more years out of the car, have gone the extra mile and started applying the (expensive) Autoglym Extra Gloss protection (liquid wax) polish. Shall probably report back on its performance after a few months.
P.P.S. I have no connection with Autoglym nor am I pushing their products; ... just happens to work for me.

hmm.

my last perm 4 was the same red-faded to pink colour. i found that if i just washed it, and then put super resin polish on it was ok.

but then i tried tcut colour magic polsih. its a red polish that isnt a cutting compound (dont like the idea of using cutting compound on a rust prone-paint faded car)
it worked for a good few months with the resin polish over the top to protect it.

my current perm 4 is also red. well it was. the roof is almost white now!
every panel is a different shade or red of pink or even white.
the real problem is lead free paint. but nothing we can do about that.

i have chosen to respray my car when i get it down to a bare shell. i'm going for gloss black. wont fade them Very Happy

Turtle wax T-Cut (to cut back the oxidation) followed by Valma red wax (to hide small scratches and enhance colour) and finally clear wax did the trick on our 33. Mind you, it is kept inside and only driven in the dry.

No matter what you had as a first car .. don't be ashamed! My first was a MiniVAN!!! Bog Standard 850cc but It took me a few laps around the small circuit at Brands Hatch .... without breaking down! Of course that was a few years back now ( in the mid 70's) when a club I belonged to did a special to allow members to take their cars for a spin.

My first car was a good condition 1700 Renault 11, 2 years before my first Series 1 Alfa 33. Interesting because in 1984 What Car magazine found in favour of the Renault. What on earth were they smoking? Question Exclamation There is simply no comparison.

Hi.... Very Happy
My first car, was a 1963 Mini...With 850cc engine. Bought it when i was 16,
to hold it, until i got my driving licence.
It had a "semi -auto" transmission. If i reved it in 1st or 3rd gear, the lever would pop back to neutral... Shocked
It was my introdution with spanners also. I bought it to a guy that camed from Mozambique, and the car had the steering on the right.
I converted it myself to left hand drive Cool Cool Cool
Died with blown engine.
Still miss that car.

hahah nice thread, its always interesting listening to what you guys have in europe Smile

First car (I owned) Holden (GM) VL Commodore Turbo, think a Opel Reckford, that is wider, stronger, with a Australian styled rear end, and a American styled front, that runs a 200Hp 3Litre Nissan Skyline motor from the factory......Had that for about a week, sadly I couldn't insure it Sad Oh what a rocket ship that car was......too bad vauxhall didn't import them into europe!

So I went back to driving the parents cruddy VK Commodore, think a Opel Reckford with lots of plastic, thats wider and stronger, but runs Australia's last home grown 3.3L 6 Cylinder motor.....and what a POS it was!

Now driving a Holden VL Commodore Calais, looking for a 33 project Wink It seems rebuilding a 33 for my girlfriend has me hooked, but alas its a P4/4WD or nothing....

To answer the original question, Tcut followed by a polish or wax. If it is really bad then it might be worth finding a bodyshop that will buff it up instead of the Tcut.

And for the follow on bit Very Happy

First Bike - Honda H100 followed by a succession of CX500s

First car - 903cc FIAT Uno, followed by 2 Triumph Heralds the second of which I still have (although it hasn't been on the road for a few years).

First Alfa - Just bought a 33 16v sportwagon, which I have already polished as I don't want it turning Alfa pink Smile

Right,

1st bike: Suzy GT250. The only stock 250 that would do 100+mph. Wrapped it round a boat trailer one night so that was that!

1st car: 1976 Ford Cortina, the original Dagenham dustbin. Nuff said.

1st Alfa: Sud 1.5Ti with Campagnoli alloys. Drove like a go cart round corners, best fun I had on 4 wheels.

As for faded paintwork, my 16v is a black beauty and looks just as shiny as the day it left the factory!
