What is it about the Alfa 33 which means it takes AGES to warm up???

Don't tell me it's just mine - I have a recent thermostat and the car warms up and stays there EVENTUALLY.

I drove a 146 the other day and it heated up in a matter of minutes!

Too big surface?
2 cyl on left and 2 cyl on right with block in middle.
TS motor has all 4 cyls close together, all warming up each other much faster.
Unless that 146 had boxer motor?

Mine warms up really quickly, I'm getting warm air before I get to the end of my road, which is more than can be said for my 145, that takes about 3 miles before I get warm air through the vents. The heater on my 33 is also a lot hotter than the 145.

This seems to totally contradict what you say, I wonder why?

Hi,

Indeed, the 33 takes some time to warm up; about 10-12 mins. The thermostat is brand new and the car runs to 85 C with tendensy for 88C.
This happens no matter if car is on traffic or highway.

However in the 147 and my parent's Merc it takes just a few minutes to reach 90C. I can even notice the thermometer gauge moving towards 90C in contrast to 33 which warms up slowly.

It aggre about the inline format of the engine plays a significant role in cooling.

My 33 is the 10~15-minutes-to-warm-up variety, and perhaps because my trip to work is only 20 minutes there's usually milky stuff or water droplets in the top of the oil filler tube. Rolling Eyes

Hi

Some white mayonaise in the oil filler is quite common on the 33.

All my 33s over the years have taken ages to warm up.

Funny thing is that our 33 1.3 IEL warms up really quickly - but for the first few seconds when it is cold, it drives very roughly. Zenith_P says this is normal with the Weber/IAW injection system - some kind of asymmetric firing or injection mode built into the ECU. Maybe it is to warm the engine up quicker? 2-3 mins is all it takes, and the car feels smooth and the water temp starts to rise. Once warmed up, it always sticks at a healthy level - fan kicks in at 90 degree, and controls the temperature perfectly.

PS: How much do high tension leads cost normally, and are they simple to replace?

Hi,

Paddy I bought silicon ignition leads for my 33 at 60€ more or less. They have silver caps and they are made in Germany.

I'm satisfied till present with no problems.

All you have to do is replace one by one in order to check for the length; be sure not to leave the lead close to the engine block for the simple reason not getting hot and deteriorate with time.
Their enemy is time and heat.

We measured the perfect lengths with some rope, and then got them made up by an auto electrician.

Hi,

Although deviating somehow from the core of the topic here is my version of mayo ...

To my observation this happens when the weather is pretty cold (today morning -3.2 C) and the other fact is that car is driven at most 1 hour per day and not consequtively.

Probably this is the reason.
