I'm currently driving a 1990 1.7 16V with cat converter. The previous owner used unleaded 95, but I have this feeling it might not be quite enough. As I don't have the manual for 16V, does anybody know whether the car has knocking sensor (as in 1.8 turbo 75) or fuel grade selection relay (as in 75 2.0 TS)? Should I use 98? I also have a 1984 33 1.3 and a 1990 1.7 ie 8-valve, and they both feel more eager to rev with a small press on the pedal.

Yeah cated versions came with fuel selection relay adjusted for unleaded RON95.

I run 98 octane in my 16V, it also have an aftermarket chip installed. The engine would ping otherwise. I have never noticed it pinging using 98 octane.

Of course 98 octane petrol is more expensive, but I don't want to destroy the engine because of pinging.

I use(d) 95 RON in my 16v non-cat, as you say using 98 makes it more responsive when applying a little pressure on the pedal at low revs acellerate harder and it seems to lose a bit of power and doesn't rev as well as 95.
Tested each grade for about 3 tanks worth.
