Not to be taken lightly! It's REALLY hardened steel!

Alan... what did you cut it with? Standard tap&die set?

Hey Lee, been there done that aswell Laughing I carry a spare circlip, 59p, in my car at all times Laughing Also had my gear stick weld brake around the bush in one of my other 33's. I had the circlip go on a 33 with no foam and was unable to select any gears, I had to get underneath the car and push the selector into 2nd gear and drive all the way home driving up to full revs, clutch in and when the speed dropped clutch out and rev all the way to full revs. However when this happened with a 33 that had the foam on, I was able to select 1st 3rd and 5th, as the foam preventd the selector from popping off the shaft. The second time this happend on a car with no foam, I was pulling away from the lights and ping, I spent 20 mins looking for the circlip, found it, refitted it and drove home very carefully until I bought a new clip. There is also the washer and rubber washer. The joys of owning a 33 Laughing

Alan, That looks like a good mod there, does it not vibrate loose? I see something on the right of the nut, what is it?

Yes with standard set, i used some tool spray and it was easy.

@ bigal

I drilled a 3mm hole for a split pin to secure the nut from unscrewing

If anybody has a picture of how the clip on a late '94 model goes on I would be grateful. I need to get a new rubber bush. The current one's shot and I can hear metal grinding in 5th. I took one off an older ('88 ) box but it appears slightly longer so I'll need to shave it a bit. I won't have time to get another as I'm due to take a 500km trip tomorrow and I'd rather not do it in 2nd. The clip is sort of folded over but not symmetrical and square in form.

I need to change the bush. I have tried it with the longer one and the grinding sound goes but the gearchange is a bit stiff and the clip only just squeezes on. It has to be done tomorrow morning. Rolling Eyes

Hi,
to get rid of that problem forever proceed as follows :

1) dismantle gear linkage and drill shift rod ; bore shall be 3.3mm

2) tap previously bore to M4 spec

3)install shift linkage in car

4)put washers on the rod

5)install C clip in its groove

6)put retainer clip across the C clip, install 20mm dia washer and torque CHC M4 bolt

7)enjoy the next million miles!

regards,
zp

Hi,

Eagle3

Is the metal grinding noise happening when changing gear, or continual when in 5th? Very interested as my '93 gearbox is started being noisy in 5th at 80mph, which has worsened to lower speeds in 5th and 3rd-sounds like a minicab that has done 3million miles.

Cheers,

John

Continual rubbing noise in fifth. Yeah the original rubber bush was perished at one end. It might just have been coming from the linkage vibrating. It's worth checking the bush out.

I'm now in good ol' Blighty. Hurray!

The 33 1.3i.e. has just done over 500 miles loaded with wine etc and I didn't need any tools or indeed the axle stands I decided to pack just in case..

I cut a slither off the end of this longer bush from an '88Ti and used just the C clip from the Ti and a washer. I have the square clip and the washers from the Ti in the boot if needs be. Very Happy
The gearchange is ok but may be better with the right bush. I'm not complaining though. The noise has gone.

I'll be glad to drive it with a lighter payload tomorrow.
