if i turn the engine off for about 15 mins and restart the electromagnetic coupling re-engages .
after about half an hour of driving it disengages again.

Hi

Most common thing that seems to trigger the 4x4 to disengage is the adjustment of the 2 brake light switches on the P4.

All the best

one thing i didnt mention is that when i start the car you can hear the engagement (a click) and even when i just let the car idle without driving or touching the brake , just simply letting it idle for a while it still disengages and the 4x4 warning illuminates..............it seems that the sensor is subjected to heat and turns itself off or something!
i have checked the earth connection for the sensors and they seem fine.

it has me baffled as it just happened without any particular reason.

How long idling before it disengages? Most likely fault is tooth mesh sensor which locates at the back of the gearbox in front of the propshaft tunnel. Its wires come through the floor to a three pin connector behind the centre console coming from the sensor. (don't mix it up with another 3 pin connector in a similar place or thye wires coming from the electro-magnetic coupling.) There are two wires going to the sensor and an open shielding wire. Use a resistance meter to see if there is a circuit when the system is running and when it is not.

thankyou for your response i appreciate it very much.
the car needs to idle (or be driven ) for about half an hour.

i will check the resistance in the wires when it cuts out..........maybe heat fatigue due to a dodgy sensor?

I wonder if these sensors are still available?
anyone know?

Yes they are still available for about 25 quid, I think.
