The good news is I think the cat on our car is OK.

The noise was the heatshields round the exhaust.

The heatshield around the 2 into 1 was barely attached at either end and full of gravel so I've removed it.

The one round the s bend just after the cat is still attached but it is nearly split through bby one of the attachment points and doesn't really fit as the rear section is a stainless replacement and, I suspect, slightly different.

So...

How essential are those heatshields, do many people still have them present?

Do any new systems come with them fitted?

Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

That’s good to hear, thought it might be as i had the same thing. I asked the same question a while back and the general consensus is to remove them.

I'm about to chop mine off Shocked I've welded the blighters on a couple of times now and the metal is so thin it keeps on cracking off again. I don't believe the exhaust runs close enough to the body to cause any problems.

Hi,

My front one is held on with 1 jubilee clip, 1 exhaust clamp and a prayer.

No back one on two cats over 7 years.

Don't loose any sleep over it, there's plenty more to worry about Laughing

Main worry is the proximity of the fuel tank!

Thanks for your input folks, I think the rear one will be coming off when I'm next under there.
