Post subject: Re: 1.7 16v engine temp
I have 33 16v and ow is too hot in NL, temperature on high way about 86 in traffic jam little bit above 90. My advises: check is radiator clean (can be clogged by flys or other stuff), does fan work, does thermostat open (should open at 85-86 for 16v), if last is not opened properly, then coolant does not go through radiator, so no cooling of coolant.
Suscess with this,
NS.
P.S.
I have changed radiator half year ago and thermostat one week ago. It is too hot in NL

on hot afternoon 90-100C is normal for 16v, as Gris said if you have no air in coolant.
There is trick to check temp gauge, turn on cabin ventilation to max, lights, rearscreen heating and see temp go up, turn all of that off and see it go down.

Hi,
My 1.4 IE runs on 85 C and when on traffic the max temp. it has ever reached is 100 C and never higher.
I agree with Bob, the temp gauge is not accurate ... my gauges show a tick higher readings when I have the lights on
so when it comes to turn on the lights, add 3 degrees to the reading
There is nothing to worry about provided that you have always topped up coolant and your vent functioning correctly. Make sure that it sucks air from the grill - I have seen vents connected the wrong way which blow air towards the grill, totally fatal for the motor.

stedee

hi
i always thought alfa boxer engines run cool to be honest because the engine has a larger surface area - being flat rather than square and the fact that the cylinders are a distance apart rather than being next to each other, but if your fan cut in and it stablised i think it should be ok, you could check there is no air in the system just to be sure

Well, on my 8 valve... general running it stablises at about 80 degrees.
In traffic - just over 100.
Ofcourse, I bet the Alfa temp meter isn't accurate.
Just make sure it's got enough coolant.

Post subject: 1.7 16v engine temp
What should the engine temp max out at?
Just got my P4 back on the road (woohooo!), took it on it's first outing at the weekend and got stuck in traffic... uphill on a boiling hot afternoon
As i was stopped i watched the temp guage go fromit's notmal 80 degs to 90, to 100, to about 102 degrees where it finally stabilised (phew!).
This strikes me as a too high but then i get the feeling boxers run hotter than other engines, and with it being such a tight fit in the engine bay 102 might not be far off.
Anyone know if this is too high? Or is this about right?
