Most fuel consuption is due to weight, and what you have fitted to the car after it was manufactured, I bet its your sound system amps weigh a lot, your 80's style mobile phone and holder and the gadgets you like fitting Al. LOL

What the heck is up with my car then, i only get 35 mpg mixed cycle and i tried not taking above 3k rpm in every gear for one tank once, made no difference. i did get 48 mpg on a run once. One thing i noticed was that after putting my tyre pressure to what i normally have it at when i put in the mileage i did in the * part of the mpg calculator

dont use my 33 everyday, so has taken a while to use several tanks worth...
but one tank mixed driving, town and A roads, i got well over 300 miles on £40.
last week i went from london to hastings, to southampton, and was about a third of the way back to london before i had to fill up. 45 - 50mpg!
However, my 33 is single carb, and rolling on 165/70 r13s. Also had my sister and her kids wiv me, so no hammering of the throttle...

Somebody told me tat the P4 tank holds more petrol than standard, but I don't know for sure.

i used to get about 240-320 miles out of my old p4. i did tend to drive it like it wanted to be driven rather than to save fuel.
IF
i get it back, then i'll let you know what it does now.
i wonder if the altitude of the moutains (i'm typing from higher than the top of ben nevis, 1400m) will impact the fuel usage.. less oxygen up here so i should be down on power.
i think the steep hills with have much more of an impact on fuel usage.[/i]

I checked my tyre pressures the other day when they were hot and they were only at 26. I have not checked them for a while, shame on me. I have now put them back to 35 fornt 33 rear, i know, i know, i like them hard, bit of understeer in the wet. So hopefully i should get better results this time.

Just had the credit card bill for my fill up at Dover......280 miles and £34 of petrol works out to about 39-40 mpg

I thought a run to SAD would be a good test. I was doing well on the way up there with Paul.H, but on the way back, following Iain, lets say we didn't cruise

Just been driving my Mum's newish Mazda 323 turbo diesel. It is a bit of a miserable experience in comparison to an old 33.

I have come to the conclusion that absolute performance is not really fun. I want throttle response, light weight, revvyness and a fun power delivery. Diesels just don't give that. The 33 did, especially with the carbed versions and the 16V, not so much with the late injected 8V. Even the 156 we have now is pretty poor at throttle response compared to the 16V engine.
Something that has lots of weight, poor throttle response and all the power in the mid range with nothing at the top just doesn't appeal. As basic transport it might be OK but with cars (and even more so with bikes) that is a secondary consideration.
Discussing the driving pleasure of one diesel over another is like discussing the pleasure of switching on one washing machine compared to another.

I'm actually part of the problem over there sometimes.
I understand diesel engines in certain cars, but they just don't fit with why I'd buy an Alfa Romeo. Even if they're supposedly Alfa's better engines when comparing like with like against other manufacturers.
If money's the justification for diesel, why take the huge financial hit of new Alfa depreciation in order to get your diesel engine? Save on the purchase price and get more of what makes Alfa special, in the form of a used V6 GTV, 156 GTA etc.
People dealing with company cars or CO2 taxes may be exempt from this.
Anyway, you can wake up now.

Dear Big Al,
My car almost never gets up to running temp. Down here in Cyprus for example today it was 24 degrees centigrade and the car on the highway was running at 40-45 degrees. That is the usual situation. The car even in the warmest day of the summer that's it above 40 degrees, the car on the highway runs at around 60 degrees. I have to get stuck in city traffic to see the needle rise to 70 degrees which is the running temp for my 33.
What do you think then?

The thing I hate about all diesels is the way the power just stops at certain revs rather than tailing away.

They seem very proud of the torque, while forgetting that the lack of revs means higher gearing, which wastes most of the torque.

You're quite right Ben. On the GT forum there is an ongoing debate as to whether diesel is better than petrol etc, really quite dull. It seems anyone who has bought the diesel version seems to need to justify it to everyone else, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
