My steering wheel hasn't been straight since I bought the car, the wheel alignment is apparently OK so I decided to take the wheel off and turn it one spline. I was trying various sockets on the wheel retaining nut and when I found the right one (it's a 24mm) I was able to undo the nut with just the socket held in the tips of my fingers, scary! It's now back on with loctite and at a guess about 80lbft. It might be worth checking yours as soon as you can.
I also had extreme difficulty removing a steering wheel. The nut must be used by the factory to mash the steering wheel bracket into the splines on the shaft until rust can seal it there forever. After that it has served its purpose and it doesn't matter if it comes off.
I needed that plus vicegrips plus a chisel and a sledgehammer! The puller shaft was bending and I was afraid it would snap violently. It was useless afterward.

When I changed mine over for the Nardi I had a puller on it and thought I was going to break something it was on that tight.
Best to check though.

Hi,
You are right , it is worth taking a look at the wheel nut. However I have had a case when breaking a 33 for spares that I removed the retaining nut with unbelievable ease and removing the steering wheel was just a case of pulling the steering wheel with virtually no force.
On the contrary I have removed the steering wheel of my 33 countless times and I ALWAYS need to use the steering wheel puller to pop it out.
Weird aint it?
Regards
