I fitted a new idle valve and all seems sweet so far, fingers crossed it was the fault. If it does it again i'll go down the recomended route of checking all the electrical connections. I think its sorted coz it would create the fault almost every time it got warm but hasn't sinse i changed the valve.

I had the same problem recently on my VW, which has a Bosch system similar to the 8 valve 1.7.
It turned out to be due to loose connections on the engine water temperature sensor, making the ECU deliver the wrong amount of idle fuel.
Check/clean connectors and plugs regularly. Sometimes simply unplugging and re-connecting them is enough, but look inside for dirty or corroded pins.
Remember, 99% of electronic problems are due to bad connections!

Post subject: idles at 2k when warm?
My girlfriends 16v will often idle at 2000rpm when its warm, sometimes a quick blip of the throttle will bring it back to normal but not always. Anyone else witnessed this?
I'm hopefull it's just a faulty idle valve on the inlet manifold?
