IWC continues to expand its range of pilot watches with ceramic cases with the launch of the Pilot's Watch Chronograph 41 Top Gun Miramar (Ref. IW389409). Unlike most regular production ceramic models, the Miramar is limited to 1,000 pieces and joins the Pilot's Watch family with a ceramic case in white, dark green, dark blue, beige and classic black.

The original idea
The overall look of IWC's pilot watches with ceramic cases adds a cool element to an otherwise standard and practical design. Today, many watches are available in multiple colors. Such a rich palette may seem excessive, especially for a watch that is meant to be an aviation instrument. It runs counter to the more serious nature of IWCâ€™s pilotâ€™s watch line, which has always been more serious, due to its history.

That said, the Miramar is a delightful watch in its own right. Its color is unique and interesting, yet unique. Itâ€™s reminiscent of Tiffany & Co.â€™s signature trendy light blue, but darker and distinctly different. IWC quality is always reliable; the 69380 caliber is a familiar industrial-grade movement in the brandâ€™s lineup.

The Miramar is also reasonably priced, though not cheap. Itâ€™s in line with other IWC ceramic models, and a reasonable price for a limited edition in a novel color.

Pantone certified
The color of the ceramic case was developed by IWC in collaboration with industrial color experts Pantone. IWC says it was a challenge to keep the case color consistent throughout the production process.

The dial and rubber strap were also carefully designed to match the style of the dial; even the hands were painted a similar blue. However, the calendar disc remained white, which looked out of place.

As is typical of ceramic cases, the crown, pushers and case back of this watch are made of titanium. As with other models in the Top Gun series, the case back is engraved with the emblem of the US Navy Fighter Weapons School (renamed Top Gun due to IWC's cooperation with the military academy).

Under the sturdy case back is the Cal. 69380 automatic winding movement, which is equipped in most of IWC's chronographs. This is a proprietary movement developed in-house and designed specifically for IWC's affordable and mid-range chronographs.
