Hi
I have some problems with my alfa 33
When the engine is cold and I hold the rpm at 1500 the engine goes to 2000 and then drops to 1500. This keeps repeating.
The engines response is slow when I press accelerate pedal.
When the engine is warm, the problems are away
does anybody know what it could be?? Do I have to change the fluids and filters or is it in the computer?
it is a alfa 33 1.4 i.e
thanks in advance |

Check all the hoses 'downstream' from the air filter.
My guess is that one is split somewhere. It may be hard to find though.

I've been told that quite a good way to find an air leak is to spray carb cleaner or WD40 on the hoses one at a time, when the engine chokes a little you've found the leak. Not tried it myself so don't know how effective it is but it seems logical enough. |

Carb cleaner is flammable - so when you spray try to keep the vapour away from the hot parts of the engine, like lower down the intake manifold!!!!!

Good point! I'd have probably found that out the hard way |

I also don't recommend starting an old boxer engine with suspect fuel hoses that might leak, without checking and replacing those hoses... as it sometimes turns out those leaks are quite near the distributor.
guess how I know this to be true...
The distributor is a box full of sparks... be careful. A fire extinuisher is a good thing to have in the garage... and probably no need to let the engine get super hot when testing anyway as the problem seems only to be when the engine is cold.
