Reinstallation of clutch slave cylinder

Hi all
I am hoping that someone can help me. I have overhauled the clutch slave cylinder and now I am reinstalling it and I cannot seem to get the circlip back into its groove. The cylinder is properly home and the groove seems to be wide enough on the side I can see, but it seems that the part of the circlip next to the gearbox doesnt want to go into the groove. Does anyone know any special tricks or tips to putting this back. I have already taken off the distributor to improve the access, and now I am desparate.

After 3 days of persistence and frustration, I done it. Easy as anything once you work it out. Or was I just lucky Very Happy Embarassed

Yeah, put the circlip in place before pushing (lubricated) slave cylinder in. Can be a pig of a job or just goes in straight away. Much easier with the engine out or without fluid in the line - bleeding it afterwards.

hi,

changed mine yesterday (13 years old) ; was the hell of a job since the old cylinder was stuck in the block.
when refitting, i used a vise-grip to hold the cylinder in its housing, preventing withdrawal due to the spring. with both hands free, it's easier to get the clip back : circlips pliers are on the side of the cylinder, in your right hand, and, using a flat screwdriver in your left hand, you push the back of the clip in its groove between the cylinder and the engine.
works great. and, remember : put lots of grease when refitting to avoid seizing at next replacement.

This job is a typical job to do with a friend. Have him hold the cilinder in place so you have both hands free to install the clip.

Some tips for anyone encountering problems with this:
First time I did this the cilinder was stuck. Use a piece of wood and a hammer to rotate/twist the cilinder, an inch to the left, an inch to the right repeat until it is loose enough to come out.

Some pressure is needed to put the new cilinder in place even if a second person is available, doing this by hand long enough for you to install the clip is hard. Have pieces of wood available to help hold the cilinder in place.

Hi all
Thanks for all of the replies. I used a small hydraulic jack to hold it in position against the spring. Eventually I dispensed with the circlip pliers and used a flat bladed screw driver to work it into the groove making sure that the thick part of the ring was on the side away from the gearbox at the start.

I noted the importance of the grease and put a thin film of moykote on the outside.

I for got to say that mine was also seized in position. I had anticipated that it would be and after I got the circlip off, I just pressed on the clutch pedal and this moved it enough for me to be able to get it out after I disconnected the hydraulics.
