Jelly molds; that's good They're strut pan bearings, to make your steering nice and easy. Where did you get them from Bobbber, and how much? _________________ Owner's Club 33 Registrar. Now from P4 & S2 1.7 QV

I like the idea of Jelly Moulds - at least they would last more than 5 minutes if they were for that!!!
Icky - the strut pan bearings (in the first photo) are from the strut (suprise!). The WHOLE strut rotates on them when you turn the steering. Each yellow, plastic and support over 1/4 of the cars weight!!! They are therefore prone to break and make steering a nightmare! Marked as 30 in this diagram :
I'm sure they allow for more 'precise' steering, but I'd consider them to be crap design.
Roger from Peak Alfa sent me them... dunno how much as we are yet to settle up on a 146 engine change he's doing for me! I'd guess £20 for the pair?!?!?

Be bloody careful!!!!
You need to compress the spring - and if you don't the recoil could kill you..... I'm being Serious!

Hi,
This is deadly serious !!! compress the spring only by little in order to undo the upper nut; not any more.

No, no the 33 cannot and will not be changed by any car. 147 is used by my sister but the repairs done by me
Think I 'll open a garage specialised in 33 and 147 in my home's garage

Ok, generally they are nicely designed engines but no sound and the worst is being transversly mounted ... no room for your hands to work on.
Will you replace faulty bearings or put in another engine?

Exactly the same part is used for the Alfa 164! My mechanic managed to identify that one was shot by trying to turn part of the strut assembly. With his hands, he could easily turn the strut with the good bearing, but the one with the shot bearing would not budge. When he took the strut to pieces, the bearing was indeed totally disintegrated (it had split).
At the same time, he always hammers off any rust from the plate that rotates on it.
On the 33 it is usually very clear when these bearings have gone as you get a clunk clunk clunk sound when you turn the wheels lock to lock. If one side has gone, the steering will also pull to one side. If the left one has gone, you will have to pull to the right to stay in a straight line.
A pretty crap design IMO, putting all that weight on plastic bearings. |

Hi,
I'd like to add from my personal experience that if the bearings fail in short time - more or less within a year - then it is indicative that shock absorbers are dead.
It has happened to me; the left strut had the bearing totally disintegrated, with difficulty in turning. When I took out the spring, I was then collecting the balls from the floor...
Then after a year again loads of graphite grease (actually the grease inside the bearing) was expelled from the lower part of the spring.Quite interesting I think ...lets open it again ... and presto again collecting the balls from the floor BUT also found item no.6 of the photo cut horizontally in half ...
So, I thought it was high time to replace all four shocks and whatever else needed attention plus all 16 suspension bushes.
I judge that these bearings really have a hard time when shocks do not work well and all the force of the spring thrusts them; probably it is is indicative.
It has now been 15 months with the repaired suspension and no single grease leakage has occured from the bearings - I can even see their color.
Paddy, this bearing is a common part with the 164.

I agree with Mr Granger. Rubbish design, because no matter which way you look at it - more than a quarter of the car's weight is on each bearing.
In actual fact - I changed them once, and heard it crack when I lowered the car back down off the jack! I was not happy!

just to add, that number 4 spring lower mount are also one of things to blame for their cracking. There is center hole which with time likes to turn from circular shape into elipse, making it move over bearing, cracking it... _________________ Tino Vatavuk

Part 1 is bent in my demolition derby car, but it looks like too much work to change it before the next derby! |

I wonder how long these parts last with lowering springs installed? |
