Hi all,

Will an ECU from a non-cat 33 16V work on a cat version of 33 16V with lambda disconnected?

hi,

basically ECUs are the same just the octane coding relay is different (relay on the red plug)
so you can swap ECUs without trouble but if you go for unplugging lambda sond please remove the cat also or you'll fry it quickly and clog the exhaust.

zp

So what happens if you put the ECU from catted 16v into a non-cat one?

it will work in non-cat mode.
ECUs are the same for all 16V
on the engine harness there is a relay-shaped device with internal jumpers which tells the ECU how it should behave (cat or non-cat, high or low octane fuel, so that's 4 combinations)
no relay is high octane, no cat
red relay is low octane, no cat
yellow relay is high octane and cat
blue relay is low octane and cat
if you want to convert from cat to non-cat, just remove the cat, lambda sond, and change the relay.
if you want to convert from non-cat to cat, you'll have to replace harness in order to be able to plug lambda sond, change the relay, and install cat and sond.

Do you know the connections inside te different relais ?

The relais are really jumpers inside connected differently, right ?

... and I'm confused about the location of the relay-shaped device. Red plug, engine harness - where is that???

Hi,

here's a photo of the red plug :

center pin shall be left unconnected
top and bottom pins are ground pins
left pin (27) shall be grounded if lambda sond is to be used
right pin (10) shall be grounded for low octane fuel

Alfonso, on LHD cars, it is near motronic unit (in front right of passangers feets). Behind place where passangers speaker should be on console.
