After scouting about on eBay for ages I've finally come across some 40mm. dellorto's in Holland, and got them for a reasonable price (E 125) too.
I assumed they would be a direct replacement for 36mm. Weber carburettors but uh-uhh. They have the same base and top patterns but the air-cleaner adapters are touching the jet holders and about half an inch more clearance is needed to avoid touching.
My question is this; IS the air cleaner adapter (90 degree alloy part) different between Weber and Dellorto or does the Dellorto use another spacer plate to pack the aircleaner bit out more or is this needed space built into another different part number altogether?
The 36mm. part for a Weber carb is obviously smaller where the air comes around and enters the carb than is needed but a grub out would soon fix that, however, the needed clearance is going to need more work. Chuck all this and fit some K&N's or find some 40mm. aircleaner adapters? Would buying Weber parts fix this or not?
I would like to avoid my shed turning into an Alfa-Romeo spare parts treasure trove/ archive and just get the proper bits. Can someone put me out of my misery,.... please? Thanks.
Cheers,... Col. _________________ 1977 Alfasud ti 1.7

No-one? No worries, I'll put on the K&N's that I ordered yesterday then, they will look and sound good
There is logically a difference between 36 IDF and 40DRLA carb's but I would have thought they would be similar in the jet holder side (the bits that stick up into the air-cleaner adapters), alas , not to be. The Dell'orto DRLA 40 carbs have very high jet holders.
On a different tack, how can I (and probably a hundred other people too judging from the amount of Arna's around) change the little title at the top of my post from 'Alfa Arna' to 'Alfasud' ? I'm sure I saw something relating to it somewhere but can't for the life of me find anything in a search on the subject of avatar or heading's etc. Anyone know, or are you stuck with it once it is locked in?
Hey, has anyone actually got an Arna in captivity anywhere?
Cheers,.... Colin. _________________ 1977 Alfasud ti 1.7

Hi,
Actually this "Arna" title under your username is a ranking depending on the number of posts you have so far.
So keep posting to become an Alfa 33.

Thank you for that information about the little titles, now I know what the Arna, Sprint, 33 etc. mean. I thought it was something you locked in when you joined this forum
Anyway, back to this carburettor business; the air cleaner adapter bits (the curved pieces on top of the carb's intake) ARE the same on Dellorto and Weber 36mm. carbs and DO fit on Dellorto 40's as well.
I recall reading somewhere about someone enlarging the interior of the 36mm. ones to fit 40's and they are fairly thick, like me
Well, when I got around to fitting the K&N air-cleaners they surprised me with the racket so I had another look at the Dellorto carbs tonight and tried again with the aircleaner adapter. IT FITS?!! What the ???? What it was is the little screw adapter for the long single bolt was still threaded on the screw and was stopping the whole lot from sitting flat. So,.... they are the same. My bad judgement. Oh well, it turns out for the better as now I can fit the 40's to the 1.7ie motor and put that in the sud instead of the 33 series 2 ti motor, which goes really well itself.
