Did anyone ever succesfully repair one of those 'orrible cable operated wing mirrors? I have 2 sets of mirrors and there's a cable broken on all of them! I spent a whole sunday afternoon once trying to repair a cable with some electrical wire and a soldering iron but it still kept snapping, they seem to be under some considerable tension! I also broke all the plastic casing up trying to get the thing apart. Has anyone else had any experience with these things? Once a cable goes the mirror just points permanantly up in the air or down at the ground....
If not, has anyone got a spare pair of decent mirrors they need to be rid of? Preferably Nero 601. _________________ If it 'aint broke.........it needs some more fixing! |

After I managed to get mine apart, without too much damage, I replaced rusted outer cable with bicycle brake outer cable and rusted inner with thin stainless steel wire. It took ages to get the inner wire the right length, as when the outer was bent to fit into the installed position its effective length changed. Some hours later I eventually got it all back together and refitted on the car. It worked really well half a dozen times, then broke again. I gave up.

Thanks. It's the driver's mirror, so I just reach out and give it a poke with my finger when I want to see something other than the road in it.
Maybe that's the way they meant it to be used? _________________ Dick Flower, Nr. Carcassonne. '94 Trofeo 1.4 ie (F), '93 Imola 1.3/1.4 ie (now for breaking) (F), '91 1.7 ie (GB)(spare car), '86 Sprint 1.5 QV (F). '87 VW Syncro camper (F), '73 NSU Ro80 (F), '99 Fiat Seicento (F) |

Blue tack holds then in place, but not particularly pretty.
All the best

It's an Alfa! Why would you want to see everyone else, who by now should be well behind you _________________ K737 MMM... my slightly dog-eared but willing 33 1.7ie 8V. Awwww. |

I've created monster, but it isn't alive
Ingredients fase 1:
a) - alfa 33 mirror chasis mount
b) - alfa 164 electric+heated mirrors casing/wings
Fase 2
c1) wiring harness from AR164 mirrors to direction operating switch
c2) switch itself
c3) AR164 wiring scheme for mirrors
Fase 3.
- few cables more
Fase 1
Separating casing from mount is easier them screwing it back, but after 4 mirrors you're expert.
Now you have A+B = same as broken cable 33 regular mirror, only it doesn't fall down, adjustemnts made as usual poking with finger.
Fase 2
if you feel lucky after few hours/days you can install wiring for operation controls from console to doors a tricky part is putting wires through door plastic guide.
Fase 3
prefered @ same time as Fase 2, cables for heating mirrors, connected from rear heater relay to each of mirrors.
Fase 2 and 3 sound like good formula for making new electric Gremlins. _________________ Tino Vatavuk

Tino,
YES! Let's start a thread of electrical modifications and additions which increase the possibility of the alfa bursting into flames even more!

Aha, so I'm not the only one suffering from this problem then!
I'm not really fussed about electric heated mirrors but I do want to be able to detect the eventuality of the 'boys in blue' being up for a chase and me having to contribute to the local police christmas party again...
I think I will look into this some more with a possible combination of original AR door fixings and some cheap plastic boy racer mirrors from Halfords. Hope I'm not upsetting any purists here! _________________ If it 'aint broke.........it needs some more fixing! |

2 Bobber, yes at least noone can tell afterward that Alfa cant warm you up.
2 Scott, Weight of electric ones is strangly almost same as non electric ones, but I agree that wires and switch would make a difference.
I wasn't talking about those self folding ar 164 mirrors!!!
You can allways fill your tyres with helium to counter that minor fat increase.
p.s. Mum Alfa and dad Romeo along with doctors at fertility clinic Puch made sure that at time of birth P4 had extra few extra heavy bones around 70kg extra to be exact. Instead of Permanent 4 they should called it fat lady because she has lovely voice _________________ Tino Vatavuk

Oh man, now I'll just go and wipe my eyes from laughing so hard at all you comedians
After all this I'll leave my functioning mirrors alone, they all work (2 plus 5 spares) albeit poorly so it must be european wet weather to blame?
