Well, I've had a reasonable spell from the Alfasud and 33 4x4 so after a recent weekend working bee session I attacked the 33 with renewed vigour. This 33 is a 1986 version so it has a slightly different shifter mechanism to a sedan because it has to crank over to the side slightly to avoid the rear drivehaft, the bit that the gearlever moves is the same though. The shifter on a 1988-9 or so gearbox is a totally different setup but couldn't be used however.
The wretched gearlever which was a right pain to get either first or second gear with was due to be replaced but after a good look at the problems it is fixed! The roll pin that goes through the rod just after it comes out of the box was very badly worn, the rubber coupling piece had gone all gooey like a bloated frog and the base of the shifter mechanism had an installation fault from a previous session (not me).
This shifter sliding block setup has two bolts that retain it but someone had replaced them with another longer pair which was restricting movement plus all the slop from the roll pin and gooey rubber makes me wonder how it even selected any gear at all was a miracle.
A spare gearbox had a good rubber bit to use as well as a new roll pin (which along with some careful assembly with new and shorter bolts) now has all gears very easily selected!
Never give up on this wretched problem and I think if you have a break from the car occaisonally it seems easier to fix.
Hmmmmm,.... what are these cracks in the front rail that I have heard and read about on this forum board but never saw earlier? Oh well, I need to refresh the welding skills again so I'm not going to die of boredom any time soon _________________ 1977 Alfasud ti 1.7
