Yesterday I went to look at another 33, and it looked good compared to the one I have now. Engine went well, and the gearbox was still pretty sharp. But one thing concerned me when I drove it. When the wheels were fully turned at either left or right, a knocking sound appeared from somewhere in the engine compartment. I guess it's got something to do with the drive shaft. Any thoughts on this and how bad it is?
And then another question. When I corner or brake hard in my own car, the oil light comes on. Could this be serious or maybe just a bad connection? _________________ /Michael

When you turn the wheels to the far end the p.s. pump is making this sound but when you leave the stearing wheel it stops but if the pump is worn out you ll hear the sound (not so loud) at any direction than str8 (my 33 does it so i ll change the pump with another one). |

It's a 89, so it can't be the power steering. _________________ /Michael

What exactly is a cv joint? And is it serious? _________________ /Michael

You say that you only here the knocking on full lock?
Yes, that's a classic indication of CV joint wear.
I'm not sure about Alfas, but it wasn't that expensive to get them replaced on my Fiat Uno years ago.

Hello,
Bill a question for you conserning the steering system:
Is this noise from the steering hearing like a wowing? How many kms have you done ?
I'm asking you this because two years ago (sept 2001 - 55000kms) i had problems with the steering system as it failed and it was sucking all the fluid of the reservoir! Thank God the repair of it costed only € 150
Do you know how much the pump costs? Can it easily be repaired?
Thanx in advance. _________________ Thanassis Gritsopoulos

Well, guess it's the cv joints then. Will the drive shafts have to be removed to fix this. And any idea how much time it takes? _________________ /Michael

Disconnect each axle at the outer end from the hub. There are 6 allen bolts going through the cv joint, undo and pull these out and the axle will come away from the hub. Check to see if the boot needs replacing, if they're broken it's probably this that's allowed water etc into the cv joint and caused the problem.
changing the cv's is a messy job - lots of black grease but it shouldn't be too difficult. I've just rebuilt the cv joints and replaced the boots which came with a pack of grease for each one. not sure how much cv joints are - £30+ each?
check the manual and have a go.
good luck, Richard |

I think a Drive Shaft will be well over £150 each for the complete unit. Don't know if you can recon them. |

If you do the CV joints, be aware there is a circlip in the middle of them. You will need to undo this clip to replace them. If you don't you will break the CV joint trying to get it apart. _________________ Scott Sander
