I've seen various threads about cambelts stretching / longevity etc. Would anyone recommend a specific belt manufacturer ?
After how many miles / months should tension / timing be checked ?
Is this a one off thing or do you have to keep going back to it after same amount of time ?
What is everyones thoughts

Hi,
The belts you want are DAYCO available from alfashop in Norwich. They can supply the new tensioner/idler wheels too.
I have never rechecked tension after doing these belts on 8v and 16v cars. Perhaps i should of- dunno- keep touching wood /cloth!!

Hi,
I'd personally avoid cheap motor factor cambelts like quinton hazel etc.
Fine for alternator belt, but wouldn't risk scrimping on the cambelts.

I check tension every 6000, and replace belts and pulley wheels every 12000.
seems extreme i know, but i could really do without having to rebuild the engine, and i've seen belts fall off after only 20,000, and i mean fall off, as the bearings in the tensioners go really loose, and these engines have alot of torque, so can spit them ioff. |

It's possible to press 'em off with a decent vice. Failing that, visit somewhere with a proper pillar press, and wave a fiver about.

Hi,
I think Gates belts are ok, and if supplied by Alfashop they should be good.
Worth checking they are definitely for 16v, as i think 8v ones are often Gates- not certain on this though

On A4As suggestion he checked mine only a couple of thousand miles after they were replaced, they were very loose!!
They were tensioned properly when replaced so must have stretched, |
