Ah, I think he must mean the M12 coz it sounds like the Alfa tool is as rare as rocking horse poo.

Please could you pm me that link again? - I didn't receive it.

Cheers

dont give up Sudmeister,
i got my head off with engine in situ, no problem, once i did it lol. just getting head pressure tested to make sure all other valves are ok and replace if necessary. I dont think the valve guide is damaged as the valve is hardly bent but there only £4 each and valves are, exhaust vavle 19.62+vat, inlet valve £10.42. I dont think i will need any gaskets as it all came apart without any damage. Apart from the head gasket.
So keep going. How far did u get?

Hey BigAl,

I did eventually get the head off with the engine in situ. But I found it such a tight squeeze that I didn't think I'd ever get it back together again; getting the head and gaskets to line up looked difficult, getting a torque wrench on one of two of the head bolts looked impossible, and sorting the cam timing with everything in place just looked a mare.

So even though I had the head off I eventually decided the engine should come out anyway. To be honest getting it out was fairly easy (3/4 hours with 2 friends).

The head has at least 4 bent valves (the Missus was decking it when the cam belt let go, and even when it stopped she spent 30 minutes trying to restart it - Doh!!). But the pistons seem fine.

I had been thinking that while I'm going to all this effort taking it apart I may as well uprate the components I put back in and try and get a bit more power (cams, skim the head, maybe do a little porting). But from what I've seen/read just doing stuff like this won't have much impact, and could even reduce power, I'd need to look at breathing, fueling, exhaust, etc as well, which starts to get expensive.

So the plan now is to give this broken engine to Brunswick Motorsport who will get me about 170-180bhp (rebore to 1.8, forged pistons, balanced crank/clutch/flywheel, port/polish/gas flowing, cams, omex ecu). Then I'll put this in my Sud with the decent gearbox that I've already got.

And the cheaper way to get the 33 running is to try and get a good engine and box which can just go straight in. Well that's the plan anyway.

Sounds like you're making good progress though. Let me know how you get on with putting it back together in situ, that looked like major hassle to me but you seem to know what you're doing (which helps) Wink

Good on you Sudmeister.
I too was contemplating more power but I’m not bothering as our lovely Alfa engines come from the factory almost with MAX POWER lol. It costs far too much to get more, unlike a crappy ford engine from the same era that comes out so under powered and with all the mods to bring it up to its full potential, only ends up where ours starts standard.
From my first experience “this time” doing a 16v head, I thought it was going to be hard, from what everyone has said. No one told me that the head is easy to drop rather than lift out. I wasted loads of time moving stuff out the way only not to be able to lift it out. So I just lowered it onto the lower arms, still attached to cross member, which was lowered so that when the engine stabiliser was removed the engine could be moved laterally allowing more room. I spent loads of time cleaning all pipes, wires, cross member and arms around the area, so that when I put it back in, no dirt will get onto anything.
My only problem is getting off the drivers side belt tensioner so I can get new tensioners pressed on and I agree with you re cam timing, that’s going to be fun. As I took the cam belt off the driver’s side, the top cam pulley moved away from its inline position. I think there is a piece of metal that slots in-between the cam pulleys teeth to hold them in place, but I don’t have one Sad

Hi Oggie – I reckon the Sud will take me a year or so to restore so that won’t be at Donnington. But once I get the 33 going again I’m planning to do a few track days so I’ll probably be there with that. I’d like to see yours go too, 197bhp in a 33 must go like stink!

BigAl – Ahh, so that’s how you get the engine to slide sideways. I undid the engine mounts and stabilizer bar but it wouldn’t budge (I figured the gearbox was probably still holding it). But I didn’t think to just drop it a bit on the arms and crossmember.

Good idea keeping everything clean, that’ll be time well spent. It was one of my concerns too, that I’d get some debris in the bores and with the engine still up high in the bay I couldn’t see the bores properly to check.

It sounds odd that the top cam pulley moved when you took the belt off. I’ve had a look at mine and can’t see the piece of metal that you describe. I would have thought that with the pulleys fixed to the end of the cam they can’t move. Anyone else have any ideas about this?

Cheers

Sudmeister
The piece of metal I was referring to is a tool that slots in-between the teeth so that the pulleys don’t move when the belts are removed. When the engine is in TDC position, I can only imagine that the cam lobes are just coming on or just coming off the buckets on the driver’s side bank. So there just being pushed when not held in that position by the belt.
