ZP,
how restrictive is the current plenum chamber and AFM.
Is it possible to remove them both and replace with a MAF on one of the throttle bodies and fitting air filters for each of the throttle bodies, would this allow for more airflow and then more fuel? _________________ x2 33 16v

Hi,
removal of the plenum and AFM is the way to go but fitting a pressure sensor is tricky as these engines never generate stable vacuum at low revs and proper idle and progression phases are difficult to achieve.
The poor man's direct ram air conversion involves removal of the plenum chamber and mechanically linking the AFM flap to the throttle. Low end torque is poor but this setup has proven efficient for race (high revs) applications.

how about changing the throttle sensor and piggy backing the output, instead of having the normal, closed or wot, you could change it for a variable one that has the same voltage range as the default and could then feed the afm output, instead of jerry rigging the afm up???
How do you get round the problem of idle using the jerry rigged afm? _________________ x2 33 16v

| On the topic of injectors....I have obtained a set of 4 which I plan to change for mine. I'm going to ultra sonic bath them as I have access to a bath but my question is this, What liquid would be best to use? Demin water? |

BigAl,
you can always convert the fuel system to something better but this might be expensive. On the quick setup i described you can achieve reasonable idle but this mod is not intended for everyday driving anyway.
lee, please avoid the ultrasonic bath, in my experience it tends to dissolve rust & crust that cause the injector to sit tight in its seat. When the crust has gone away the injector is leaking and hot restarts are a nightmare. If you still want to have them cleaned, use ordinary gas as a cleaning agent, you need to pump the fuel through the injector in the REVERSE flow direction while the injector is hooked to an electrical supply that switches it on and off quickly.

I was looking for a cheap everyday driving mod that would make a lovelly induction noise, as i miss my carbs, oh well. i was thinking of geting my injectors cleaned, but when its done it just looks like they connect them the normal way around, should i ask for them to be done the other way round??? _________________ x2 33 16v

hi, yes cleaning the injectors is done pumping gas through the nozzle as the crud will likely be expelled through the same path it came in. Otherwise the biggest particles might not be small enough to get out through the nozzle.
Oh and i forgot, replace the small filter at the injector inlet while injectors are off the car.

I mentioned getting my injectors cleaned toa car modding place and was asked what mileage they have done, about 60k and i was laughed at.
The manual says that cleaning should be done at set service intervals, i cant remember what though, should i get mine done? _________________ x2 33 16v

Bobbber mentioned a programmable MAF that outputs in the ranges of what the ecu is expecting from the normal AFM. Could you take a reading from the idle actuator valve to give a stable idle "pressure sensor" and either let the programmable MAF convert it or something like that, along with my post about this? _________________ x2 33 16v
