Good morning. House in Bourne, and after the last big blow we lost a section of ridge cap and a handful of shingles near the rake edge. Nothing is leaking yet but I am not keen to find out what happens in the next storm. Every contractor I call seems to be booked into the fall. Is that normal this time of year, and is there any point calling companies from off Cape or do they add travel costs that make it pointless? It is a single story ranch, so nothing complicated in terms of access, and the roof is about fourteen years old otherwise.

Booked into fall is normal after a storm season, everybody calls at once and the good crews fill up first. Off Cape companies will come, but you often wait longer and pay for the drive, so local usually wins on both counts. Missing ridge cap is worth treating as urgent rather than cosmetic, since that is where wind gets under the field. We used a roofing company in Bourne, MA for a similar repair and they got a crew out inside a week. Ask whether they can tarp it in the meantime if the schedule slips. Most will, and it costs almost nothing. Get the rake edge looked at properly while they are there, that is often where the next failure starts.
