I press on. A little 'screwdriver sharpening' later :

Removal of the former repair reveals a small hole :

And here follows some (surprisingly good!) keyhole photography :

I think that looks good in there, considering.

Going to get the grinder out tomorrow with a wire brush on the end and give it a proper de-rusting. Here's hoping there's something left after I've finished doing that! Laughing

Looks pretty good inside Bob. Worth salvaging.

Is the hole you uncovered where it was leaking from originally?

Yes Lee, that hole was under the sealant stuff that a previous owner must have put on there.

I'll sort that out though.

Bob

Hi,

Tank looks very good inside. I would advise you to weld/solder the opening and the spot welds and of course protect the outer surface; this is the one that needs attention in order to last in the long run.

Regards,

Cheers guys.

Than, It's Hammerite smooth. Using it purely because I've got a fair bit of it. The tank was not rusty at all but i thought a clean down and another layer of paint would help against any rust getting in to it.

my brother had a p4 a few years back and he took the tank out to stop it leaking all over the drive and road.

he cleaned up all the rust and found 3 or 4 small holes that he then used chemical metal to reair. the tank never leaked again after that.. well till he had an argument with a dear and the whole car died. but it was about 3 years after the repair.

i know its not the best way to do it, but he needed his car and it sorted the problem at the time.

Hi,

This is the repair that was done before I owned the car (chemical metal) and it leaked badly.

I guess properly done it would be ok for a while.

"properly done" isnt really what he did i spose.. he's no menchanic but he did spend the whole weekend doing the job. he did take his time and maybe the holes were not too bad? i never saw them before the repair.

your right though, its not the right way to fix the porblem.
