These kits used to be available but i havnt seen any around for about a year. Does anyone have any spare bushes for the 33 16v linkage? I've changed the bits a few times with half decent second hand ones but the result is never perfect.

I did replace the bush on my first ser 2 and i was forever going from 1st to forth, you really had to push the gear lever over, didnt make any difference to the porridge effect.

How will the gear stick centre itself without the aid of the rubber bush?

Does anyone know if the gearstick and gearstick bush have the same part number and are the same between a ser 2 and ser 3?

I lost my clip again last week (actually my friends may well tell you that I've permanently 'lost my clip' but that's another matter) so was lucky enough to spend some time staring at the linkage.

Where the end of the rod goes into the socket (on the end of the selector coming out of the box) I'm not sure you need any movement, I think the only reason for the stupid pin in bush in socket held on with a poxy little clip arrangement is to avoid the gearchange feeling too notchy and to allow for those drivers who shove the gearstick where they think it should go rather than feeling where it wants to go.

I've got a spare linkage from Alex and I'm thinking that I may grind off the narrow bit at the end of the pin and drill and tap for a bolt coming upwards instead, you could then bolt up the whole assembly much firmer (or threadlock the bolt in slightly loose, allowing some movement). It would also be interesting to replace the rubber bush with something machined from nylon.

Al, where would you put that joint?

Drilling and tapping a bolt is the way forward Jeremy. After losing three 'poxy' clips myself i did this mod about three years ago and haven't had any trouble since. I didn't grind the bottom of though, i just packed it off with a couple of suitable sized washers. I didn't have any trouble drilling mine but some have said that it's hardened steel (maybe they varied off the production line?)

Lee, are you saying you just drilled straight into the end of the pin below (as installed) the clip slot and taper? Isn't this rather narrow, I'd have thought you could only use an M3 whereas the major portion of the pin (the bit that sits in the bush) is surely good for an M5 or even M6 drill and tap.

I may well get a machine shop to drill and tap to get a bit more accuracy on the centering and straightness fronts!

I can feel a diagram coming on later.

Never having had my bush out ( Shocked ) what's it like, is it just a rubber tube or does it have a floor to it (with a hole for the pin of course).

Get your bush out.......it's quite an experience!

Yep, drilled straight in the end. I did put an M5 bolt in also which was longish and went up through the meaty part of the rod so it's shouldn't have any weakness issues. Did it on the car aswell... just made sure my pilot hole was straight and took my time. The bush from memory has a platform at the top to stop it falling down through.

Hi

Did it to a 33 years ago (a 1992 carbed car). Drilled across the linkage and put a circlip through. It was a complete pig to drill and after a few hours and a barely noticeable mark from the drill I landed up giving up and taking it to our local Alfa specialist and it took them ages as well.

All the best

Keith

In the bottom of the gear stick

can someone provide the hole size for the gearstick, the one i have has failed at the weld and the stick has broken off, this is how i got it. I measured it and got
shaft width 38mm
internal shaft 6mm
hole width 27mm

How close am I?

what I am looking at doing is either getting a Spherical Bearing Housing/Cup, as suggested by Kam
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Spherical-Bearing-Housing-Cup-5-8-size-Rose-Joint-/380117242545?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5880c0d2b1
or
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Spherical-Bearing-Housing-Cup-3-4-size-Rose-Joint-F2-/160455429363?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item255be38cf3

with the same OD as the ID of the gear stick and pressing it in and then fitting the rose joint with the circlip to hold it in place and if needs be make a tube up for the ID of the spherical bearing to match the original width and allow use of the original bolt.

Or use what I thought of before

http://www.igus.co.uk/_wpck/images/global/1_2/igubal_eglm_1.jpg
http://www.igus.co.uk/wpck/default.aspx?Pagename=igubal_Gelenklager_EGLM_mm&C=GB&L=en

with the same OD as the ID of the gear stick and just make up a tube in the middle to be able to use the original bolt.

This will allow those of us to just swap and nothing modified, what do you think?
