|
|
My idle has been hunting all over the place for the last week and I've been able to smell fumes so when I arrived at work I took a look under the bonnet.
The oil filler (the whole plastic assembly not just the cap) had popped out of the block, I pushed it back in and all is fine.
What holds this into the block, is it really just a push fit? _________________ '93 Black 33 1.7 16v |

oh ohhhh
not a good sign.
Overheating also? Bad performance?
Sounds like over pressure in your crank which can cause all sorts of problem.
You have a PCV valve or breather?
Something maybe blocked.
This can cause oil seals to pop out (like mine did and lost 2 litres of oil in minutes!!).
The top filler cap should just be held in loosely by a big o-ring and the tube just a push fit. This should not pop out under normal conditions.
Check your oil vapor circuit.

I had this on my original 1.5 engine years ago, never did try to find out what was wrong.
I ended up buying a 1.7 engine for it instead of lookin/buying a new car. _________________ PHAT 33 |

All I have now is a small pipe that exits the oil filler pipe feeding into a 0.5 litre clear bottle with a 3/4 inch hole drilled in the upper side.
No filter to clog either.
The oil collects nicely in the bottle and keeps the crank free of any pressure.
All other original vapor recycling inlets are blocked off to keep the carbs clean.
The old alfasuds had just a pipe going onto the ground before they introduced emission tests!! _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV

Engine is a definite 60k miles from new with good service history and no previous issues, it also uses less than 500ml oil per 10k.
I've just cleaned up the engine bay and made sure the pipe is firmly seated, it's a fairly light fit (only moderate pressure need to get it in / out). It pushed in about 3cm until it hits a ridge in the block, is this correct?
No sign of any O ring other than the orange one just under the plastic part of the filler but that is nowhere near the block.
The breather pipe from the oil filler to the plenum was clear.
Are there any other engine breathers on the 16v catalysed engine I should be checking?

If the breather circuit is all ok then maybe the filler pipe just loosened due to vibration. Maybe some gasket sealant around the base to prevent it from coming out again.
If the engine is idling bad and hunting then it's the ECU unit/lambda I guess. Hunting is normally a sign of lean mixtures or/and air leaks.
I have carbs and not too familiar with the more modern versions but there are other members here who are.

Not familiar with 16V engine but there's usually a screw/long bolt maybe that holds it in place or for example on my 1.3 it's a 1/4 turn bayonnet fit. _________________ Alfa33 QO 1984

Hi,
On the 16v, the oil plastic filler tube has a slight bayonet twist to it's fitment too.

Ok, I'll give it a try (though if I tell my wife I'm off out into the garage tonight to "give my filler a twist") I may be sleeping out there too! _________________ '93 Black 33 1.7 16v |

John, do you mean the plastic part to the steel tube fits with a slight twist or the steel tube to the block? _________________ '93 Black 33 1.7 16v |

My ex 16v had a similar problem.
The oil filler neck came off. Not the vapour separator that is locked with a screw, but the complete neck, came off from the back engine cover.
The symptoms were similar. Bad idle and hunting all over the place .
If i pressed the oil filler cap with my hand the engine idle normalised.
I glued the neck with a special glue that promised to glue metals. It worked
All the best

I think plastic part twists off, but it's been a while since i've done it- removed it to create more clearance when dropping the engine.

You're right it's not a quarter turn. More like an eighth.
I remember bobbber did a tuto on cleaning the breather pipes on his P4 IIRC. _________________ Alfa33 QO 1984
