|
|
Been getting some noises from the right hand suspension. Thought it was the cv joint, so re-filled it with new grease and still the same.
Then I noticed this morning the right hand side of the car tilting a few degrees.
I will check the tyre pressures again (but did this 3 days ago) but it does look like the body is tilting so that rules out tyre pressure.
If the damper is knackered will I lose some elevation/height?
Also does feel a bit more bouncier on the right side (unless it's my imagination).
Have to get it into the workshop to have them tested I think. _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV

I wouldn`t discard a colapsed spring...
The springs rust, and sometimes break a coil (usually the bottom one).
If the car is tilted to one side, don`t discard also the rear springs. _________________ All'interno della mia macchina, vi sedete, tenete sopra e CHIUDETE IN SU... |

I had a check but couldn't see anything unusual though.
The car is pretty rust free here due to the climate and no salt on the roads luckily. _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV

Hi Brit,
If I remeber right, the alfa (boge) original dampers
have oil plus a small gas pressure inside, but it is not much,
when I had one out of the car I easily could compress it by hand,
so I doubt that if damper lost its gas you can see any car tilt..
Other aftermarket type (as some monroe)
has no externally visible pressure at all,
Don't know if your dampers are a different
type with more gas pressure inside..
At front sunspension I will think about a yellow bearing
damaged (the one under the lower coil plate), and the coil
plate sitting in wrong position, but it seam to me
you recently changed those bearings?
Ps.: Rear coil are both sitting in correct position? _________________ Alfa 33 |

I never gotten around to replacing the yellow strut bearinsg although I did spray lots of lithium grease around it but that made no difference to the noises I am hearing.
I will book the car in for a suspension check up in the next few weeks.
It will just have to survive until then. _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV

Uhm..
for my experience when you arrive
to hear some rumor and car is a little tilted
you can have a destroyed yellow bearing
and the lower coil plate sitting out of the right
position and inclination,
scrabbling against the damper chromed stem,
this generate the rumor when damper compress
and make the damper a bit blocked,
more firm than normal. First time
I cannot understand what was going on
and I go on many months adding spray
grease on the chrome stem
(rumor disappears for some days)
thinking it was just the damaged boot
that make powder go on the dumper..
Fortunately the coil plate is a very weak metal,
if it is scrabbling it destroy itself a bit but
for some time doesn't damage the chrome stem. _________________ Alfa 33 |

Had the cv boot removed and the bearings cleaned out, re-greased and re-fitted.
Still get the clunking sound.
Now the sound appears when releasing the clutch in 1st and second gear, and when turning slowly (parking for example).
Does this still sound like a strut bearing failure or more like a driveshaft bearing wear(the 6 large ball bearings)? _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV

Try looking at the bushes where the steering arms join the rack. Mine were really worn causing similar clunking noises. |

but would that make a clunking noise when releasing the power in 1st and second in a straight line?
I think this is a job for the garage to check all the parts out.
Time, tools and space are lacking unfortunately right now. _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV

Yep. Mine used to clunk accelerating. Quickest way to dismiss this theory is to sit in your car, engine off, and wiggle the steering wheel side to side and listen for any play. |

Thanks man.
I'll try that tonight.
Car has been booked to go in on Monday.
Spoke with him on the phone today and when he inspected the CV joint on Thursday there was no sign of play or damage inside which is good. Lats thing I want is to have a knackered driveshaft.
But he didn't have time to test it and listen to the noise (my misses needed the car that afternoon!!)
So could be some of the other possibilities. _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV

Not sure why you have the CV joints worked on when just about everyone suggests checking the suspension struts....? _________________ Dick Flower, Nr. Carcassonne. cuz one jubilee clip was slightly loose and all the grease leaked out! Sprayed the black gunk all over the place! Wasn't a job I wanted to do.
So this was the first thing to check, clean and re-grease this joint. _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV

Car is in the workshop for a suspension check up.
Hope the damage to my pocket is not too much
In front of me was a very nice modern 911. Suspension issues also!! _________________ S2 33 1988 1.7 QV
