A faulty ignition switch has similar symptoms. I'm surprised you haven't at least tried another.
I was crossing fingers in my C15 every time I started it. Not that that helped. It was completely random. Although by the time I go round to changing it the thing had become progressively less and less reliable.
A simple wire to be used from the solenoid to the + terminal was in the glove box if required. Since changing the switch this has not been needed. _________________ Alfa33 QO 1984

I have never changed one before. Are there security bolts that have to be drilled out? If I can get away with not having to change it.... _________________ x2 33 16v

No drilling.
I had to change mine after the car was broken into. You have to turn the key to a certain position which allows you to push the button in on the side to slide it out. No very difficult. _________________ Alfa33 QO 1984

Thanks I'll bear that in mind. I have one key for ignition doors and petrol cap, rather keep it that way
I'm hoping I don't have to change it. _________________ x2 33 16v
