When players start their journey in PoE 2, many smart adventurers quickly learn one key trick: saving Gemcutter’s Prisms (GCPs) can make their whole build much stronger later. These shiny items are more than just simple upgrade materials — they help your skill gems grow faster and stronger. This is why many players stack them early while also looking for useful PoE 2 items that match their build.

First, Gemcutter’s Prisms improve the quality of a skill gem. Quality might look small at first, like a few percentage points, but in PoE 2, even a tiny boost can change everything. More quality can mean more damage, faster attack speed, better range, or improved defenses. Because of this, players usually keep GCPs instead of spending them right away. When a player finally finds the perfect skill gem or a powerful support setup, they can instantly make it stronger using the GCPs they saved.

Another important reason to stockpile GCPs is trading. Many players want to buy PoE 2 items early in the game to speed up their progress. GCPs are easy to trade, easy to carry, and always valuable. Because the early game economy changes quickly, GCPs work like a safe “currency bundle” players can use at any time. For example, when someone finds a very strong bow, staff, or ring, they often trade it for GCPs because everyone needs them eventually. Saving them gives you more power when negotiating for better PoE 2 items later.

A simple but effective early-game strategy is this:

Avoid upgrading random gems. Only use GCPs on the skills you plan to keep for a long time.
Check every vendor refresh. Sometimes shops sell high-quality skill gems. You can buy them and resell them later for profit.
Collect gems while leveling. Even low-level gems with quality can be sold or traded for more valuable items.
Save at least 10–20 GCPs before upgrading your main gems. This ensures you don’t waste your early resources.
Some players also visit trading platforms like U4GM when they want to move faster, especially if they need to buy PoE 2 items that boost their build right away. Having a stack of GCPs makes this even easier because it keeps their resources flexible.

A helpful tip many experienced players share is to focus on upgrading your main damage gem when it reaches a higher level, usually around level 15 or so. At that point, every point of quality gives a noticeable improvement. This makes your next boss fight or campaign act much easier. Also, keep an eye on support gems — some supports gain powerful bonuses from quality, such as extra area, stronger damage multipliers, or improved efficiency.

In simple terms, stockpiling Gemcutter’s Prisms is like saving fuel for your strongest engine. It helps you keep control of your build, lets you trade for better PoE 2 items, and gives you the ability to boost your power exactly when you need it. With smart saving, careful gem choices, and steady trading, you’ll move through early progression much faster and much smoother.
