Merry Christmas to everyone
I have changed my thermostat two weeks ago,the mechanik told me that both the 8V and 16V use the same part.He fixed three cars ( 2 16V and 1 8V) at the same week,i guess they last for about 10 years. Now i finally have hot air inside the car ( a frosty winter in Greece),and the temp is between 80 and 90 all the time.As i saw the thermostat is sealed and i dont think you can open it and seal it back .Its was not very expensive ,it cost me 45 euro.
Happy new year

Changed mine last week on a P4 , it's a sealed unit cost about £23 I think!
Seasons greetings and all that!

Hi,
The thermostat in the late 33's is a compact barrel like device that is thrown away as a whole when it stucks open. It contains a gas ampoule which determines the opening temp. By this way when the gas escapes from the ampoule this means the end of the thermostat's life; the good news is that the thermostat is designed to stay open if it fails . So you dont have the risk to overheat your engine.
Replacing a thermostat however can be sometimes difficult if your car is equipped with power assisted steering. If so you must remove the intake manifold in order to gain access to the mounting bolt and the clamps which are hidden.
If there is no PAS then it is more easy to replace it.
Also mine was replaced exactly 2 years ago and it was the first time I needed to replace it;indeed they last about 10 years as Bill also said. I had to remove the intake manifold and also replace the manifold gaskets . The thermostat cost me about 25? and the gaskets no more than 1.5? and the rest the work was done by the mechanic ; total about 50?
Finally having the car the proper running temperature is a VERY important issue because otherwise the car has increased gas consumption which comes from the fact that since the engine is cold the gas mixture has to be richer and richer.

While you are changing the thermostat have a look at the pipes going to it. They are getting on a bit and with the disturbance they are about to get, they might split. _________________ Scott Sander

Hi guys
I've replaced two of ours with the 2piece Sud unit and a thermostat to fit at a fraction of the price of the one piece unit out here.
