|
|
I was changing the front pads this weekend (33 1.7IE series 3), and sorted out the connections to the pad wear indicators (they were previously blowing in the wind!)
There is an additional wire which comes from the engine bay, through the inside of the wheel arch which isn't connected to anything! It is black, with a plastic connector on the end!
Someone told me this could be an unused ABS wire (my car does NOT have ABS). Is this standard? If not, what is this wire?!?!?!?
Thanks!

there are two wires for the wear indicators this third wire may be for the wing indicator though this would normally be in a plastic pipe |

Now I'm really confused!!!
I'm pretty sure I only have one wire going to the wear indicators!!!! _________________ Fiat Bravo 165 Sport |

My s3 33 also has only one wire (on each side) for the wear indicators.
Actually I already have found a couple of connectors in my car not connected to anything. I imagine they are there in case the owner would like to add some extra accesories supplied by alfa.
Cheers,

Isn't it just an earth wire, to short to the disks when the pads are worn?
If thats how it works then it would only need one wire.

The wear indicators on the s2 have two wires I'm pretty sure all you ppl with 1 are missing one. The discs aren't earthed so how can you complete the circuit with one wire once the pads are worn? |

I've got an series 3, and it really works fine with one wire. There is a wire from the +pole to the indicator on your dashboard, and a wire from the indicator to the inside of ONE of the pads on each side. When the pad is worn, the wire (or actually a small metal plate) touches the disk. As actually the whole car body is earthned, the electical circuit closes, and the light on the dashboard goes on. Maybe the alfa engineers assumed that on series 3 the pads will wear evenly, and one wire per a pair of pads is sufficient. That's the only explanation I can think of.
Cheers,

Hi,
Marcin is right - The Nuova 33 has only one wire on it pad.
When It is eaten away the wire grounds with the chassis and presto the light goes on.
To my experience, the drivers side pad wears out faster that the other side's pad. What I had concluded is that since my car only travels with its driver (drivers side around 70 kilos heavier ) the pad is more stretched.
My AR dealer told me that the old Alfas (Julia, Junior, Veloce etc) had a more powerful spring that holded the pad more stable thus not allowing it to wear out unevenly; The 33 obviously does not have it.
Anyway, I am using the ATE discs (Powerdiscs grooved) along with ATE brakepads for the last 4 years. I am very satisfied with them since many times they have done their job as they are supposed to do.
