Hi All,
Just put my 90 33 1.7 QV 8 valve through the national car test in Ireland. And after getting the emissions and all the other niggling bits out of the way, the last thing I'm down to is side slip, the reading it's getting is 16m/1km, the allowable is 14m/1km. One of the little niggling things was the near side front tyre was at it legal limit, so I replaced both. The thing is, before the tyres where replaced, the side slip was 4m/1km. The tracking is exactly right, I got it checked and rechecked. One mechanic has suggested going to a toe in and trying again. Has anyone experienced this kind of thing or any other suggestions on what to do.
Thanks.
Mike. |

Hi,
If I understood correctly your car slips to one side when you apply braking, correct?
If so, then check the brake hoses - due to aging the rubber losses it efficiency and when braking it actually gets swollen.
So, your foot's force goes not only to the caliper but also to the hose for expanding.
I have replaced mine all around about 6 months ago. It was done on the basis of a complete braking overhaul - after all the four hoses costed 32€.
Finally it would be a good idea to check toe-out by checking the ball joints for being bent, loose etc.
Hope this helps, _________________ Thanassis Gritsopoulos

The other point to check would be the sliding pins for the calipers. They can become sticky over time and a clean with degreaser and lube with something like a high temp teflon grease can work wonders. This can also show up as uneven wear rates between the inside and outside pads.

hi
i once had the problem due to faulty tires.
i exchanged the left and right front tires then the car was pulling the other side. fairly simple to check out, but don't drive with the tires inversed as the rotation of the tires gets inversed too.
regards,
