Hi,
I'm convinced my 33IE has one of these problems - how would I tell which!?!?!
Thanks!

Valve clearance noise will be present all the time, piston slap will diminish or disappear when the engine warms up. N
Regards Eddieiether is fatal. _________________ A LITTLE FURTHER A LITTLE FASTER |

Phew!
Thanks Eddie... that 'neither is fatal' is worth alot to me!
I think it's therefore piston slap, as it does it for a while then goes away... tick tick tick!!!
Do you think using some 15W/50 might be a good idea!?!?!?
It's got 115k on the clock now.
Thanks!

It normally takes few seconds to go off. If too long, try another grade of oil. _________________ Each time I speed I say, "Dear lord, make me fast and accurate..." |

A higher viscocity?!?!?
I'm gonna try some 15W/50 this weekend... I'll let you know what happens!
Can always take it out if it makes things worse and put 10W/40 back in.
Cheerz folks,

How about lower 'low temp' viscosity? Since it might be a sign that your oil is too thick when cold. _________________ Each time I speed I say, "Dear lord, make me fast and accurate..." |

Piston slap is where the piston doesn't go straight up and down the bore completely parallel to the bore face. The piston 'shimmies' up and down, with the piston twisting very slightly around the axis of the piston pin as the forces work on it. The piston skirt just touches the bore and generates noise.
It generally happens more with worn engines, where there is more clearance

hi all,
The last reply is correct in description-i know about that because i like to punish pistons!
Pistin slap is very common with small 2-stroke engines that have been thrashed.I have not really experienced it on a 4-stroke as far as i can remember.I think valve clearance noise sounds more vairious with its taps and rattles all mixed up.But piston slap is more repetative and predictable with its noise.
Your high milage does not spell big problems,my 1.716v has done 131,000 miles and still sounds sweet. |
