As most of you know Mr.Agnelli passed away last night. Mr.Agnelli was the President of FIAT. The Agnelli family did much...actually they made Alfa Romeo happen after the 1980's, a time which could have been the end of Alfa. Because of the Agnelli family FIAT won Alfa Romeo from Ford, thus allowing the start of models such as the 155, 164 and of course the most wonderful of them all the 33. The Agnelli family, through market strategies and new engineering, were the main reason that FIAT and Alfa survived. Umberto Agnelli was the last of the Agnelli brothers, FIAT has always been a family business, with Umberto the youngest brother taking control from Giovanni Agnelli after his death last year. Nobody knows what would have happen if FIAT hadn't taken control of Alfa...but one thing is sure...we would not be driving the 33.
So RIP Umberto Agnelli

Was he a gangster??

Are you on about the Alfa Romeo 33 Mk. 1 & early 2's(the 1.7 Veloce being the finest 33) or the FIAT aka Alfa/Lancia Late Mk.2's and mk.3's?? That name on the chassis plate makes a difference.

The Alfa 33 was introduced before Fiat bought their majority share, but you're right about their help in returning Alfa to profitablility. I also doubt that the 3rd generation 33 would have been quite the same.

Umberto was never in the limelight as much as his older brother Giovanni, but he managed to put Fiat on the right track after becoming chairman last year.

By reuniting the family, Umberto and his sister Susanna, managed to sell many other familly investments including the famous Chateau Margaux vineyard. All the cash was then poured into Fiat Auto. With a potential return to profitability in 2005, Umberto's defining legacy may yet come.

Rust in peace! Wink
