Congrads on making 12 months with the site, its a usefull busy stop.
topic:
Are 2.60mm tappet shims abnormal?
I revently baught a mod'd 8v engine. Never started, changed cams/ valves/ compression etc. I dont know heaps about it.
I was told... the tappet clearence wasn't done.
So I made a tool and checked what shims were in the buckets, calculated new measurements etc... the exhaust valves came up OK. (within standars shim range 3.25 t0 3.80 ish.
The strange thing is... to get the inlet valves ( middle two buckets) to gap OK, I had to machine shims down to as low as 2.55 / 2.60 etc.
How strange is this. The shims sit below the edge of the bucket, Im not sure if the cam lobe it touching the bucket edge?.
I am thinking to start the engine like this/ then check for wear / and if needed machining the buckets down a mm.
What do you fellas think??
