Hi I have an 86 1.5Qv which has started to lose fluid from the rear brake drum, whats the most likely thing to have happened? I was thinking the cylinder must be leaking....can they be repaired or do you just fit a new one? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in adv. Kevin

Indeed, the cilinder is the first thing I'd think of. Just replace with a new one, they are not very expensive. Remember to bleed the brake circuit after the operation.

Cheers

Hi,

It is definately the pistons that trigger the jaws that leak. I replaced mine after 12 years in operation - when it was time to replace the jaws (at 70000kms) I noticed that there was a kind of moisture between the dust cover and the metal part of the piston.

The funny part was that when i removed by hand the dust cover then fluid started to drip on the floor Sad which meant that sooner or later I would discover one fine day a flood of brake fluid on the floor...

I bought those two at the price of 30€ both.

Be sure not to dismantle the regulator thing that adjusts the clearence between the jaws and the drum;otherwise you may have problems engaging the handbrake.

Regards,
