Hi all,

Last week, I replaced the gearbox and clutch on my alfa 33 1.7 16V from 93. It all seemed OK, but the first time the engine had a cold start (when choking), it really runs bad. In idle mode, the engine barely keeps itself alive, and after pushing the throtlle a bit, he sometimes dies. Also, when driving, it runs like it only uses 3 cylinders, or like if the engine knocks(detonates). When the engine starts to heat up, the engine starts running normal. It also idles normally. Although the engine seems to run a bit raw. I don't know whether this is because the new clutch is a racing type without torsion springs.

Does anyone know what could be going on. During the gearbox and clutch replacement I dismantled the distributor. It could be that the distributor wasn't put back correctly, but how can I be sure, and how do I know what way toi turn it to. Also, I doubt whether this is really the problem, because after chocking, it seems to run OK.
Furthermore, a cable with two wires remained unconnected after rebuilding the removed engineparts. The guy who helped me, doesn't remember whether he removed this cable or it was already disconnected before I started. I wasn't able to detect where this cable came from.

Please advice,

Thanks

I had this problem on my P4 and it simply turned out to be a faulty ignition lead that only worked when the engine was warm. If it is not this cable that you've mentioned start the engine and whilst it is running roughly take out one ignition lead from the top of the distributor (with something insulated so you don't get electrocuted) and see if it makes any difference. The engine should then run badly or die on you. If so switch off, replace the lead and try with another. However if it makes no difference whatsoever this lead or plug is obviously doing nothing and is the problem. But check what that cable is.

I do not think it has something to do with the ignition leads, altough I will check them. I replaced them about a year and a half ago.

Could it be possible that maybe I didn't replace the distributor correctly. Maybe when chocking the ignition spark isn't early enough. When the distirbutor is angled wrong, the spark will maybe sometimes not and sometimes it will run through the distributor. When the engine starts to heat up, the motor management will increase the ignition advancing and maybe than the rotor will be in the right position.

Does anybody know which way the rotor of the distributors turns, so that I know which way to turn to, to make the rotor make contact a bit earlier

Greetings

Alex

This is a photo of the connector. The wire runs through the plate to the battery. I do not know where this cable came from.

sadly I cannot acces the photo. I think that u have to upload it first, and then put the url adress betwen this [img]http://......[img]

If the cable has no conectors on the other end, it might be the grund cable
that ataches to the body of the car, in the engine compartment, under the accelerator plate (aprox). try uploading the image

I cannot upload the photo. This forum does not support it. It can only show photos that are already on the Internet. Maybe I can send it by e-mail. If you like, you can send your e-mail adress to: alexvanwijngaarden@zonnet.nl

Did you remove the exhaust manifold during the operation? If you did, the cable might be the lambda probe...I suppose the idle would be terrible if the lambda probe isn't connected..! Wink Just an idea, but you're welcome to send me a picture!
