I have a normal air filter box in my series 3 and have forgotten to re attatch the tube that directs the air into the box - I have found the car sounds better (don't know why), but i'm concern whether its detrimental to the car.

nope not really basically u're just not getting 100% of cold air in your motor...now if the tube was disconnected from the box to the engine then u'd have problems...but since the opening in the box is so big u're probably getting 80% of your air from it...the tube is just there to somehow "direct" air into the box.

"The car sounds better" Cool I'll give it a go! As pimp dudu says, the pipe directs cold air into the box. As long as the air is filtered before it enters the engine, no damage can be done. The power will be reduced, however, as the air entering the engine is warmer and less dense. You basically have the same effect as a K&N 57i kit, without a ram pipe.

We tested our car with your setup Shocked Our original air flow pipe rotted away a while ago, and we had replaced it with some cheap DIY tubing (original part costs something like 50 euro).

Quite a nice sound, and fully controlable as it only kicks in at 3500 rpm when you nail it. At low speeds there isn't any difference unless you open up the throttle. We couldn't notice any loss in power at all, infact if anything there was a slight power increase - this could have been psychological as the noise is so tremendous.

We think that the purpose of the tube is probably to make the car sound more 'social' if anything. We will be leaving the tube off Razz

Interestingly, you can't hear the induction as much as a passenger (on LHD cars). The difference in sound whether you're sitting left or right is huge! Why is that exactly? It's strange because the passenger is sitting nearest to the airbox. Rolling Eyes
