Hi everyone
I was just thinking about making a new parcel shelf for my 33, as my current one is sagging a bit and doesn't like holding speakers. Has anyone else done this before, and if so, any pointers on material and mounting etc
thanks

As the others say, MDF. With mine, and a couple of others I have made, I made an insert and bolted it to the original shelf. Under the shelf I used a stiff metal bar. With the plastic pins that sit on the side supports, I added short aluminium tubes held on with silicon and long thin screws into the ends. Since I did nott need to lift the parcel shelf all that often, I added two bolts with wing nuts underneath, going through the shelf and the supports. The MDF insert was carpeted and the speakers were bolted on. _________________ Chris Notsis |

We inserted speakers into our parcel shelf. The sound quality (distribution around the car) isn't that good. Almost all of the sound comes from the back, so the passengers in the back get more in their ear than the people in the front, even with the balance set properly. I would advise you to upgrade your front speakers too, takes the load of the back ones a bit and will improve the overall distribution. |

Hi Dave, I'm just in the process of designing a new parcel shelf for my 33. I am using the old one as a template and intiend making new one out of plywood. This way you are using a material that is lighter and stronger than MDF. If you do not wish to replace your existing speakers, just ensure the boot compartment is well sealed once the parcel shelf is closed and this will in effect use the entire boot as a speaker acbinet.
I intend to achieve this with foam or rubber around edge of the shelf. |

I made a parcel shelf out of plywood, cos it was cheap and the only wood available in a big thin sheet. Two bracing bars stop it from sagging down in the middle, and I made it removable since I often carry a lot of stuff in the car.
The speakers I mounted in the parcel shelf were free, but they sound far better now than when they were in their original tinny little plastic boxes.
I didn't put much time into the shelf's construction, and the plywood splintered a bit around the edges. But if I'd been spending more money, I'd have done a better job. |
