Hi there,

My 1991 33 is making a creaking sound (like a creaking door) whenever the clutch pedal is depressed - even when the car is turned off. The clutch works fine otherwise.
I have tried using WD40 but it only helps a little. Could it be the pedal return spring or similar? Thanks

You need to work out where the noise is coming from.... from the pedal assembly, or the clutch itself.

Hi,

I have exactly the same thing happening. After dismantling the pin that connects the clutch cylinder to the pedal, I noticed that the pin was worn out in three intervals. Two coming from the fork lever of the clutch cylinder and one from the pedal itself.

The solution was to install a new pin but no great improvement was made and it seems that either the pedal hole or the ones of the clutch cylinder fork, is wide open and the slack causes the cracking sound.

I intend to replace the clutch cylinder in the near future along with brake fluid and see it this cures the noise...

Hope i helped...

Regards

A while ago my clutch made a 'woop' sound when I released the pedal. The sound was coming from the clutch slave cylinder area, so I just sprayed some WD40 in there and it made the noise go away.
Unfortunately the rod which comes out of the slave cylinder sits at a crooked angle, and there are only a few bits of dust boot left to fall off, so I don't think the actual problem has gone away. =|

I have had the same problem, but fortunately it was just the pedal assembly which needed some lubricant. I would check that before anything else.. Wink

I've had that noise periodically since the car was new. If you listen under the bonnet you'll hear it clearly - and the suggestion to spray the slave cylinder area works when the spray finally hits the right spot. The fix lasts a few months before the creak returns again.

try the return spring on the brake pedal itself.... my 33 always made that creaking noise and it was just the rutrn spring... could be a sign of impending doom cos mine snapped about 2 months after the creaking started!

the joys of alfa ownership!

Hi,

Alex, I have tried the clutch without the spring and it still makes the noise... So, the sound is produced either from the cylindel or the pedal ...

I think the best solution is to start replacing each and see if it stops creaking.

Regards,

I remember my Alfa 33 (1985) having also developed a nasty, severely creaking noise (combined with a judder in the pedal) eminating from the clutch master cylinder a number of years ago. Lots of silicon spray, directed into the master cylinder by pulling aside the rubber dust boot, have cured it for years now. I never expected such a thin, liquidy spray to have such a long-lasting effect. I expected to take the cylinder out for a complete overhaul. But I was, and still am, delighted with the effect that the spray had.

Thanks for the replies!
Its turned out to just be a worn pin where the pedal pivots. $5.00 plus $15 AUS labour - so not bad! Pedal noise has gone completely now, and feels smoother.
